And there's some of us who would never think nudity is unneeded.

Thanks to this board, I was prepared for the big flash.
I hope you noticed that I flashed you back during last Sunday's matinee. My lady behind me slapped my ass when I did it. Kinda naughty and a real Brechtian device. But then some Stalinist usherette forced me from the theater...which was kind of unfair and very unBrechtian even unWeillisch. I think you should tell the theater management to make an announcement: "no cellphones, pagers, loud candy wrappers, or big weenie display from row D."
Otherwise, it's all fair game in my opinion.

I never ONCE thought you were nothing more than a drag performer, BCR. When I saw Threepenny, I was blown away by your performance, and I'm not just saying that. I posted my thoughts somewhere on this board when I got back from the show, and said, among other things, that your take on Lucy was inspired and brilliant. "Lucy's Aria" was one of the highlights of the show for me. Everyone feel free to do a search, as I posted this way before the reviews of the show came out.
I DO think that the flash of nudity is somewhat unnecessary, even though I agree that it's a Brechtian device, meant to further separate the line between theatrics and reality. As a Brecht purist, though, I believe that it creates a, perhaps unnnecessary confusion in the audience. I don't think we're meant to believe that Lucy Brown IS a man in drag. The character is a woman, and the line between the character and the actor playing it is purposely enhanced, so as to create that sense of alienation in the audience. But for that effect, it's not necessary to flash the audience. It seems like it was just added for "shock value".
Then again, nudity itself is almost always gratuitous. And the fact that people DO react with shock (and are stil arguing about that scene alone) proves that the intended effect was achieved.
I would also like to add that it's insulting that "Threepenny Opera" was almost completely snubbed from the Drama Desk Awards. It may not be a show to everyone's liking (it's not SUPPOSED to be), but it's certainly deserving of recognition.

This thread was positive for about one second, so that honor can't be given to me.
I wasn't pointing any fingers, all I'm saying is that whenever a Broadway actor/writer/performer/etc. decides to post on BWW, half the people here get stars in their eyes and congratulate those people for their courage and honesty to post openly on a board, shower them with praise, and let all hostility drop.
Even when something as obviously fake as NathanLane began posting, I called him out from the beginning, and others, including some of the boards most venom filled posters put on a mask and said just how simply divine it was that they were posting.
It hasn't been the case yet with Mr. Rooney, but I'm just waiting for it.

I did a show with Brian. He didn't flash then but he did give us all a private show in the dressing room.
Ok, I think I made that last part up. Still, I am rather surprised at everyone making such a big deal about being flashed. It happens so much in theatre these days, why are people making it an issue? Whether it's effective or not doesn't seem to be the problem but rather that it was done at all.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 2:21pmI agree with you Munk. I apologize if I came off as a "suck-up". I worked for the professional theatre who produced a production that BCR was in last summer, and I am excited that someone from that show has gone on to make their debut on Broadway.

No, you have nothing to apologize for, especially to me!
I wasn't saying you - it just happened that I posted that right after you made your comment, but it was in no way directed towards you. It wasn't directed towards anybody. Yet.

There's nothing wrong with being NICE to someone, munk. If a performer comes on here, why can't people say, "I think you are great!"....?
I mean, it IS annoying if someone is hypocritcal about it.
I think one person, here, in particular, was a little suck-up-ish.
And I am sure disagreeing with Brian whether or not it is needed will not make him hate you...as long as you keep it a clean discussion (well, as clean as possible...).
I am not sure what I just said. I'm not feeling well.
