A 30th anniversary production of The Who's Tommy is on tap for Chicago's Goodman Theatre in 2023.
The show's co-book writer and Tony-winning original director, Des McAnuff, will return to stage the show and reexamine the material for the present day. Based on the groundbreaking album, The Who's Tommy features a score by Pete Townshend of The Who, who wrote the show with McAnuff.
Performances of The Who's Tommy will run June 13-July 23, 2023, with opening night set for June 26, 2023. In 2019, a Broadway revival, also directed by McAnuff, had been announced for a 2021 opening.

I’m excited for this. I hope it transfers to Broadway. I really think this show needs a “rock star” like Harry Styles to lead it. Or Brendon Urie.

I hope they don’t pare down the cast and production values if this transfers to Broadway. They did a production at Denver Center a couple years ago with 16 adults in the cast, and it looked sad. Tommy should be big, loud and spectacular, just like rock and roll. I think this would be a good vehicle for Mike Faist.

Wish it wasn't Des McAnuff...a great score, but I'm generally not a fan of directors revisiting their work.

Yeah, when he directed the 2013 Stratford Festival production, it was a duplicate of the original Broadway one.I hope that’s not the plan this time around.
