Well...three weeks ago I saw GREY GARDENS and I had a seat in the balcony. I was also the first in line to get into the theatre. So I go up to the balcony and the usher seats me. Now I'm all alone up there with him (but there was also a tent with the lighting designer and stage manager).
Anyway, he is seating me, gives me a playbill, compliments me on my clothes, then starts to leave. Then he says "oh! I have something for you..." and this is starting to get shady. I begin to think he's hitting on me when he tells me that I get a "free pin." I chose the one that says "I sliced my life and licked the knife."
I think the producers (or whoever thought this up) was very smart in doing this. I put mine on and went to Roxy's after the show. I saw others with their buttons on and we talked about the show. Others at different tables overheard our discussions and would ask about the show. It created a nice conversational buzz. Plus it was a nice memento of the show that's cheap for the producers to produce.
The only thing that still bugs me to this day..."I sliced my life and licked the knife" was never said nor sung in the show....where did they get that from?
ANYWAY - what do all the other buttons say?
If I heard right they are actually quotes from the real family.

i believe that line is from the song THE CAKE I HAD
As soon as I heard "knife" I just picture Little Edie in the docu eating Hershey's ice cream with a pink plastic knife.

I got the "Taste is for Cowards" one and wear it proudly
My friend saw it the other week. it was a special night and he was given t-shirts and pins from the show at a pre-show reception. he is sending me a t-shirt and one of the pins. I am a happy camper!

lucky, they had many multi-colored logo shirts, very nice colors. I can't wait to go back and buy some merchandise.
He already sent me a t-shirt but it is too small so he is sending me a larger one (My days of wearing a small size t-shirt are long gone!) I think I will get a larger size of the one he sent. It is the grey one tha says:
East Hampton
Grey Gardens
ES. 1897
New York
I don't know what button I am getting. I am sending the small t-shirt back to him.
I saw the show and I didn't get a button!
I have three buttons:
"Here's your pate mother darling"
"You are now entering grey gadens"
"Meow"
And I also have a Black grey gardens logo shirt! I love it!
My friend and I went last week, and we spent time looking through the buttons for our two favorites. We ended up with "Jerry likes my corn" and "STAUNCH"! The buttons are a great idea. I couldn't believe they were giving away free stuff...

I'd kill for the War Should Be Illegal Pin....I have a bunch of others if anyone wants to trade....
I got STAUNCH! Does anyone want to trade? Anyone have an extra "Here's your pate, mother darling"?
I went to the first Friday during previews and that really nice gay usher gave me like 20 pins...I'm pretty sure I have most of them!
My button says "I only hope my costume stays up."
There are 32 buttons in all. My favorite is "We've done more than just hold hands..."
It was originally a preview promotion and they weren't giving them out last night (though there were a ton at the party) so I don't think they'll continue that (but if you ask the ushers they may still have some in their office and they are usually really nice about things like that).
And the tent in the balcony is actually for the Light Board Op and Spot Ops. The SM is backstage right.

For those of you who have seen the show, would you recommend buying the CD and listening to it first before going to the show? I've seen the Doc, but I wonder if the music is okay to listen to or does it give away too many plot points, etc?
Also, now that it has opened, any word on if the new songs will be recorded? I don't want to have to re-buy the CD if they repackage it or something.
I love my buttons, but I fear now that it is open they will stop giving it out!
well i bought the CD the moment it came out but made myself not listen to anything until i saw it. personally, i love a surprise when i see a show. but that's just me.
I was at Grey Gardens last night. They are no longer giving away the bottons but were selling them at a dollar a piece for BC/EFA. They are starting to run very low and they are getting picked over. I think they will be completely out by the end of the weekend.
I could not find the "Da-Da-Da Dum", "Jerry likes my corn", "Its a goddamn beautiful day SHUTUP!" or "Do you think my costume will stay up?" buttons. I bought 13 different ones. :P
