Trying to plan upcoming weekends in NYC. Among you theater insiders, do you have any sense on how these near-future productions are going to land? Any help is much appreciated. The shows I'm looking at include:
An American in Paris
The Audience
Doctor Zhivago
Gigi
Hand to God
It Shoulda Been You
Living on Love
Skylight
Something Rotten!
The Visit

I know An American in Paris got quite a few raves in its out of town tryout late last year. I'm looking forward to seeing that.
The Audience seems to be getting a pretty positive response so far. It's a limited run, so if you really are interested in this, you might want to see it soon.
Hand to God got a huge response Off Broadway. I'm hoping the success carries over when it opens on Broadway. I'm really pulling for this show to find an audience.
The others I don't know much about when it comes to word of mouth.

The Audience is supposed to be a tour de force for Helen Mirrien and just okay play.
Living on Love and The Visit were both quite popular at Williamstown this summer and both have exciting star turns.
Something Rotten is a total unknown.
Then there is the show with the loudest buzz of all… Hamilton

I can only comment on the shows I'm most looking forward to.
Fun Home (not on your list, but it should be!)
The Visit
Something Rotten
Hand to God
The King and I (also not on your list)
The Audience
Shows I have no/little interest in
Gigi
American in Paris
It Should Have Been You
Dr. Zhivago
Anything else on your list I simply don't have enough knowledge to classify.

Posted: 3/3/15 at 5:34pmWord of mouth was pretty good for Gigi in DC. Everyone seemed very enthusiastic about it when I saw it and I talked to people who saw other performances and audiences loved it just as much. I heard people talking favorably about it and recommending to others and it got an immediate standing ovation. Of course, reviews were mixed to positive.

I'm taking a trip in early April and the shows I'm looking at are...
Finding Neverland - new and fresh sounding score, huge potential for fresh choreography and sets, follows story of the movie/book
Something Rotten! - an original work, extremely talented leads, tap dancing, lots of fun, about young playwrights writing the worlds first musical to compete with William Shakespeare's work in Elizabethan England
An American in Paris - incredibly talented director/choreographer, HUGE potential for choreography
Hand to God - original American work, funny, dark, interesting concept
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime - transfer from West End where it won 8 Olivier Awards, discusses autism
Fun Home - incredibly well received at the Public off Broadway, great music and interesting construct, story about a young artist discovering what her sexuality means to her

Posted: 3/4/15 at 2:17pmSomeone will always pop in with a glowing report on GIGI; at the boards, the news was decidedly mixed from first preview through closing, many people bored by it, and disappointed in the meh casting other than Clark and Hoty. If you want a 1950s show, a stage classic is a logical option, which GIGI decidedly is not. AN AMERICAN IN PARIS has no proven stage credibility, but with the score and dancing, it might be the better choice. Just a guess, like everything else this season.
