You may not like "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," but it's still a fine character-establishment song for Curly and atmosphere-establishment song for the show as a whole. It's very well-integrated.

I have to agree w/Sondheim but primarily Gypsy. It is the perfect blend not to mention that the book can stand on its own minus the music pretty well. A lot of musicals would be dead in the water w/out their music i.e. Rodgers and Hammerstein--dont get me wrong, I love them too tho!

West Side Story

There are so many excellent shows that these just jump out at me.
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"

Question: I'm having thoughts on NINE. I would think it has a somewhat seamless book and score. Although, the plot is much like COMPANY. Not much there, more of a theme. Although like CoMPANY, it expresses the atmosphere of the show and the characteristics of each character. Would you say this of NINE?

Definitely THE MUSIC MAN.

Meredith Willson, genius.
Laughter is much more important than applause. Applause is almost a duty. Laughter is a reward. Carol Channing

My vote would be for MY FAIR LADY. It's hard to argue with the integrity of the source material, and the songs and lyrics seem to flow organically from it - and you can really see that by watching the Leslie Howard/Wendy Hiller film of Pygmallian, and see how the songs fit right into every moment.
