Posted: 8/13/04 at 12:31amI have to agree w/Sondheim but primarily Gypsy. It is the perfect blend not to mention that the book can stand on its own minus the music pretty well. A lot of musicals would be dead in the water w/out their music i.e. Rodgers and Hammerstein--dont get me wrong, I love them too tho!

Posted: 8/13/04 at 2:20pmQuestion: I'm having thoughts on NINE. I would think it has a somewhat seamless book and score. Although, the plot is much like COMPANY. Not much there, more of a theme. Although like CoMPANY, it expresses the atmosphere of the show and the characteristics of each character. Would you say this of NINE?

Posted: 8/13/04 at 6:14pmMy vote would be for MY FAIR LADY. It's hard to argue with the integrity of the source material, and the songs and lyrics seem to flow organically from it - and you can really see that by watching the Leslie Howard/Wendy Hiller film of Pygmallian, and see how the songs fit right into every moment.
