Well, I'm officially stunned...
*mouth hangs agape*
This is one of the most complex and interesting novels I've read, and the concept of it being musicalized has never, ever entered my mind. Not a light read!!
I wish ALW could be placed in a time machine and transported to 1976 before he was actually allowed to compose/write this project, but that seems unlikely, no?

I thought he just gave an interview last month where he said he had no intention of ever writing another musical!
Are you putting us on?

I HAVE TO PLAY THE CAT SOMEDAY.
Yes, I know, a little pre-mature, but I am like 80-95% sure this is going to be a must-play role for me.

There's an article on BWW's homepage...ALW said this in the article:
"It will therefore almost certainly falter and will depend on who my collaborators are. At the moment I have not approached anyone."

This could be a fascinating new work.
Maybe, if we're lucky, Webber will be able to get Michael Kunze to handle the book and lyrics. Kunze has already proven himself capable of doing this type of material, and is an *excellent* lyricist.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 5:14pmI get such a chuckle when the contingent of "experts" rip apart a composer or performer, especially Andrew. Try this, rise up out of the ranks of community theatre, make something of yourself in the industry, and perhaps your opinion will carry some weight. The actuality is however, that true professionals rarely critique one another because they respect one another and are secure enough in their own abilities and talents.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 5:31pmI think this can really work and be amazing with the right lyricist. ALW has a talent for making gorgeous melodies, and with a good book and good lyrics, this really can work. I look forward to it.

Oh seriously. Don't you, like me, have trouble hearing the melodies due to the clanging of deja vu every time you hear a Webber score?

Posted: 8/25/06 at 6:26pmLike Andrew is the only one that has a style that occassionally repeats itself. Rogers and Hammerstein wrote the SAME SHOW three or four times with different locales..and anyone that can honestly say they don't here similarities in alot of Sondheim's work is either deaf or stubborn. I can listen to Beethoven and know it's Beethoven without knowing the piece. I can also do the same with Handel..so people REALLY need to get off that sopabox when its comes to Webber. When one listens to the overture to Jesus Christ Superstar and then the intricate operatic runs in Phantom, I dare you to tell me that they are the same composer. The man is a genius of MANY styles, and so what if an occassional melody crosses one another. Hey, you're listening to him enough to recognize that, so he must be doing something right.

SWEET! This sounds like a great project. And who the crap said that he can not write music to represent mood and whatnot? Have you ever heard his Requiem. There are moments that I just want to cry (and have) and others that I am energized by the feeling of the music and the performers. I wish you theatre snobs would get your asses off your "Webber Bashing-No one but Sondheim is great" high horses and write a show yourself so we can all bash you for not being Sondheim. God, sometimes this place makes me want to throw things out of the window.
DG, I need a hug!

Also, I would like to add that I agree with Hamlet that ALL composers rip themselves or others off. I was listening to the SOUTH PACIFIC CONCERT dvd yesterday (which is great, by the way) and realized that:
1) They repeated themes and full songs numerous times
2) During two or three of the songs, I was actually singing another Rodgers and Hammerstein song in my head, to that melody.
So, it is not just Webber.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 6:45pmThe Master And The Margarita is a really interesting play actually. And just the right kind of material for a musical. The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain did it a couple of years ago as a play with music and it was really well appreciated. I think it will be interesting anyway, I'll be interested to see what he does with it. Who will be the lyricist?

This sounds interesting. It seems to me he is about to take on an ambitous story. In my opinion, I think his music is extremely theatrical. His approach to writing has matured since Joseph and Song and Dance. He is a master at creating the right 'mood' for a scene and has been ready to take on more edgier material. I think Master and Margarita will prove this.
ALW is an artist. At this point in his carrer he has nothing to prove to anyone. Pieces like The Beautiful Game and Woman in White seem like it was written from a real mature place in his life. I have little doubt Master and Margarita will show even a greater strength.
"It will therefore almost certainly falter and will depend on who my collaborators are."
This quote tells me he is not in it for the money (although it takes much of it to mount a show) but rather in it 1) because of his love of theatre and 2) to tell a great story. It's as if he is acknowledging writing/creating music is it's own reward.
The only thing...he needs an A-Class lyricist for this project.
Leave the Trevor Nunns, Charles Harts and Don Blacks at home.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 7:36pmIt sounds great indeed. I am keeping my fingers crossed for him and like some other people have said, I also think this would be a great opportunity for a reunion with Tim Rice. They seemed to like working together on putting on stage their first ever musical, 'The likes of us' and on the new 'Evita' production, so they might be ready for a whole new collaboration.

Glad to hear that his mind is still primarily involved with composing -- although this may take some time before we see it mounted on stage.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 10:39pmI've just realized my terse post from before rhymes. Lord Andrew, if you read this board, you may use my rhyming post as a lyric. The predictable rhyme will probably work well with the rest of the predictable lyrics Don Black or some one else will write.

Repeating a theme in a show is one thing, using it in another show is diffrent.
Like in Joseph... when the golden Chariot pulls up so joe can meet his dad again and you clearly hear the Jesus Christ Superstar fan fare.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 10:52pmThe music's awful, but the lyrics of his post-Rice shows (with the exception of Cats) really make me laugh. I say we start a thread prediciting what the lyrics of this new show will be like.

I am thrilled about this! I think I may pick up the novel in the near future and read it.
And he is definately great at setting moods...
WIW had some of his best mood setting music, in my opinion. You can argue that it wasn't his best, but you can't deny the moods he set.
I like this new Andrew...I think he's being more bold...that quote I posted above shows that he knows he's being ambitious, and I like that...it shows that he's becoming more mature with his ideas.
