Which win scenario do you feel is the most shocking, but also plausible???
For me, for some reason, I just think Applegate upsetting Clark would be the shock of a century, but for some reason, I can see it happening...

If it happens - big deal. Christina gives an exciting, talented, and heartfelt performance, so does Victoria.
This isn't like if Christina wins, Victoria is going to die. You (well some people in general) make it sound like this is a life or death situation. It's the Tonys!

The only thing really shocking would be if the voters couldn't decide AT ALL!

I can definately see a repeat of last year:
Idina robbed Tonya.
Christina could rob Vicky.

I don't see that "shocker" as having an even remote chance of happening.
Sara Ramirez is by no means a lock - I'd give my vote to Kelli O'Hara.

I personally would love to see any of the other actresses nominated steal the thunder from Clark. I'm always rooting for the underdogs.
And if I'd say at this point, Ramirez's biggest competition is probably Kelli O'Hara, whom I would love to see take home a Tony.

Posted: 5/21/05 at 1:27pmI'd love to see Kelli win it over Sara.

Posted: 5/21/05 at 1:27pmNobody "robbed" anyone of anything. The voters simply voted for who they wanted to win. To insinuate an actor stole something away from someone else is silly :)

I second a Tony for Kelli, PJ.
Bah, Craig. You know what I meant, darlin.

Craig - you are 100 percent right with your comment. People are always complaing about who robbed who from the Tony - and it gets me mad. You are so right. The Tony voters vote for who they think deserve the award - the actor or actress isn't robbing the award from anyone.

Honestly, I wouldn't consider it THAT big a shock if Applegate won. I don't at all agree with it, but in addition to the fact that she's a name and the whole Ms. Congeniality thing might get her the win, though I don't think she deserves to win based on performances, and I really hope Vicki prevails.
I think though there are favorites in all categories, the only thing that seems a very very safe bet is Norbert winning. If he doesn't that would be an extreme upset and undeserved. Even broadway.com in its odds for all nominees says for Norbert he should start making room for the trophy. They acknowledged in almost every other category that everyone has a chance.

Rooting for underdogs? Why don't you root for the performance you actually believe is best?

Posted: 5/21/05 at 3:02pmLet's not forget how limited the voters capacity for taste and truth is. They're not voting for who's best, they never do. It's always a political, nonsensical, popularity contest. I also agree that Ramirez is not, by any means, a lock. She's got stiff competition as far as reviews and word of mouth go.

Well, I tend to root for the underdog, but that's because I tend to enjoy them better. That said, I'd love to see Celia Keenan-Bolger win Featured Actress in a Musical, that'd be fun. Hell, I'd love to see Spelling Bee take a bunch of awards home on June 5.

Posted: 5/21/05 at 7:13pmI agree with Al. What a LARGE portion of the population doesn't grasp is that the Tonys are a huge popularity contest... I rank the Drama Desk awards as more legit than the Tony Awards these days. You can pretty much BUY a Tony, as Avenue Q proved last year.

It is not just a popularity contest. Many of these voters are making their choices based on how it will affect them economically. If a voter is involved in regional theater or touring productions, they'd be much more supportive of seeing a show that can fly in Iowa or Nebraska win, not The Light in the Piazza or Pacific Overtures.
I think the reason that so many people "in the know" were shocked last year by Wicked losing to Avenue Q is that Q seemed to have limited potential for productions outside New York. Whether it was the highly successful PR campaign the show engineered or people truly voting "their heart", the fact is that a group of rather stodgy, traditional voters took a big plunge last year (and I couldn't be happier about that choice... Wicked is still doing great business and now people who were resistnat to seeing "the puppet show" are discovering how great it really is).

I think the biggest shock would be Norbert coming away from the awards empty-handed. Christina could win, but it wouldn't be shocking, I don't think. As my signature says, 'Anything can happen...'

Posted: 5/23/05 at 10:28amI'd be stunned if Applegate didn't win, actually. What a story! Think of all the people who are working this week because of her determination. I'm no fan, but I think you'd have to call her the frontrunner.

Posted: 5/23/05 at 10:37ammy feeling is "the road" will vote for Applegate, because she's a better name to eventually tour. You never know, though.

Posted: 5/23/05 at 10:40amGiven how the Tony Awards are all about politics and never who's necessarily "the best," I am, at this point, expecting Christina to take it. I'm not exactly sure why, but I just feel it coming on. But I will admit that after seeing Victoria Clark perform last night on the Drama Desk Awards, I can see why she would be considered a "shoe-in."

Posted: 5/23/05 at 10:57amI believe Sutton will win over Christina and Vicky. But the most surprising would be Pacific Overtures wining best revival and it could happen though it will most likly go to La Cage (which wasnt the best revival) I understand that the Tonys are all polotics but if u are awarding the best of sumthin take a look, PO was by far the best of the 3.
