Matthew Warchus winning for God of Carnage.
Right? I mean, I haven't seen it, but obviously it must be good. But c'mon, "The Norman Conquests" is pure genius. I think it's very hard to write genuine comedy that relies on language rathe than shtick, and The Norman Conquests manages to do that, for 8 hours!
Yankee, didn't you say that Martha Plimptom would win for Best Featured Actress?
Olivo won, I didn't think that was a predictable category at all.
Surprised? Most of the critics/commentators were predicting this.
Boo to Karen. She doesn't deserve it. Give it to Martha honey....it'll be good karma for you. Spend the money you make on WSS on dancing lessons.

Wouldn't the tie for Best Orchestrations be considered a surprise?

The biggest surprise of this year's Tony's was the Nominations. I was happy that most of the categories that I thought would shock us and let me down actually went according to plan and satisfied me (Olivo,Hair).
It would have been nice to honor Horton Foote this year but I'm not unhappy with God of Carnage winning. It's a great play.

Yeah, I said that I hoped Martha would win, but she really had the same shot as Raul. Karen winning is not a surprise or an upset. Martha winning (Raul, as well) would have been.
Regarding the tie - that's a surprise. The winners are not.
And for the record - the commentators were predicting Warchus to win for NORMAN, not GOD.

It was a surprise, but the New York Times survey of Tony voters said he would win for God of Carnage. That survey is by far the best predictor of results -- last year was an aberration, but in previous years they correctly predicted the David Hyde Pierce win and the Julie White win. The only one that they got wrong this year was that N2N would "perhaps" win best book over Billy Elliot.

Oh, get over it. To be disappointed that person you wanted to in didn't get it is one thing, but to insult the winner and say she "doesn't deserve it" is ridiculous.
Ummm...The Suprise was Elton John NOT winning best score.
As for Martha, well I don't think she even came in 2nd...I think that Haydn Gwynne did and Martha was a possible third.
I was suprised by Roger Robinson winning for "Joe Turner", and Gregory Jbara for "Billy Elliot", beating out Sieber (who probably lost his voter base to Kudisch and Swenson, actually).
Karen Olivo deserves her Tony 150%. Marcia Gay Harden, on the other hand...next to Janet McTeer's unbelievable performance in "Mary Stuart" and Jane Fonda in "33 Variations", I think it's silly that Tony voters awarded the movie star who just pretty much yells and goofs off for 90 minutes.
It's telling that you think she's a movie star. Rather than... an actress who started on stage and can fluidly move between mediums. Well... to be honest I'm not sure she's ever left the stage. Pollock? That was theatrical... as are all of her film performances... and not always to her advantage.

Surprised (and THRILLED) by Tom and Brian winning best score.
inlovewithjerryherman, you think Fonda deserves the award? WHY?! I could barely hear her the entire show and she was so one note.
Did anyone else see Christopher J. Hanke really quick towards the beginning of the show? Ha. I was like, "I Know him!" He and Heidi have been hanging out a lot lately...BFFs I guess?
don't get me wrong, i luv me some Marcia Gay ( i know all about her history, KJisgrrovy), and she was the high point of the SUPER overrated "God of Carnage".
Ripped, I enjoyed Fonda - I thought she was underplayed, to be sure, but did some lovely work. She wasn't necessarily better than Harden, but she certainly wasn't any worse.
I really thought it should have been McTeer. Single best performance of the season, imo. Such intensity and passion that never became overplayed or too "bravura" - she was a queen, but at the same time, just a woman in desperate circumstances.
All three were working with good, but not great material, and McTeer was the only actress that not only acted her face off, but lifted the material to new heights.
I think Harden's history with "Angels in America" helped her too.
Elton John losing Best Score and Karen Olivo winning Supporting Actress were the biggest surprises for me...
The Suprise was Elton John NOT winning best score.
And thank God for it.
not really a surprise, but i still think Will Swenson should have won.
i think they gave N2N score because they wanted it to be recognized in some sort due to Billy's sweep.
