If you've never been to Mars 2112, the kids will probably love it. It's across the street from the Wintergarden. Futuristic theme, 'aliens' wandering from table to table. Food is just OK and pricey, but if you're looking for something different for the kids, it should do.
"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."
-- Thomas Jefferson
John's Pizza (44th St near 8th Ave) is very noisy, but the pizza is good and the space (a converted church) is interesting. My kids also liked Bubba Gump's--around 44th St. & Broadway--a touristy place, and pricey, but the food is surprisingly good. Of course, it helps if they have seen "Forrest Gump" so they can "get" the decor and menu items. Beware of the gift shop! There's also Dallas BBQ on 42nd between 7th & 8th. I believe they closed for a while and then reopened; I haven't been there since then, so I don't know if it's still good, but when I was there the food was very good.Another very large, noisy place (but not quite as noisy as John's.) Of course, my favorite place to eat before a show is the Edison Cafe in the Hotel Edison (47th between 7th & 8th)--usually calm, a theater district landmark, good "diner" food--but it might not be "fun" enough for kids? As for theme restaurants, Bubba Gumps, always busy, has great views and the shrimp dishes ain't bad. Around the corner on 44th, Carmines (Italian) has has a great family atmosphere and huge portions that you can share. A bit further down the block, Angus MacIndoe's (American) is a popular district hang-out, a little less busy on a Sunday. Also on 44th, just east of 7th Ave is Victor's BBQ, for Southern grub.
I've had great success using MenuPages when looking for a restaurant. See link below. http://www.menupages.com/
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
You're right, Craig, now that I think of it--I would mostly go to John's for the food, definitely not the atmosphere. It was so loud last time we went that my youngest son (age 13) couldn't wait to get out of there! I think the acoustics are just really bad. I have to say I was disappointed with the M&Ms store. Unless you are incredibly into Mars/M&Ms and want to buy a bunch of merchandise with the logo on it, there really isn't much to see. I guess the wall of M&Ms in different colors is about the biggest attraction for me! I like the Hershey store better, because they sell more actual chocolate!
