I always find it really interesting to see which songs are performed at the Tony Awards.

Which songs do you think should best be performed for this year's range of shows? Do the chosen songs depend on the nominations (e.g. if Judy Kuhn was nominated as featured for Fun Home, would it be more likely that Fun Home was represented by a song which features Judy?).

In the case of Something Rotten!, the audience loved the "A Musical" number. Do you think it might work as a Tony performance?

Which song from Fun Home would you most like to see performed? Which song do you think is most likely?

"Welcome To Our House On Maple Avenue" represents Fun Home pretty well. It showcases most of the cast.

The King and I: "Shall We Dance?" or "Getting to Know You"

Fun Home: "Welcome to Our House on Maple Avenue"

It Shoulda Been You (depends on nominations): "Who?" (Howard and Grisetti number) or the song at the end sung by Daly, Harris, and their husbands at the end, or the opening number

On the Town: "New York, New York"

Something Rotten!: "A Musical"

Finding Neverland: (if Kelly is nominated) "Believe" (if Grammar is nominated) "Live by the Hook/Stronger" (if both are nominated and the one I want to see) "Play"

My guess would be Yellow Shoes, as that is the biggest number in the show.

Depending on which show is nominated, here's my predictions:

*An American in Paris-I Got Rhythm/An American in Paris
*Doctor Zhivago-Love Finds You
*Finding Neverland-Believe/Stronger
*Fun Home-It All Comes Back/Come to the Fun Home/Days and Days
*Gigi-The Night They Invented Champagne
*Honeymoon in Vegas (if it's nominated)-When You Say Vegas
*The King & I-Shall We Dance?
*On the Town-New York, New York (I also think that would make one Helluva opening number)
*On the Twentieth Century-On the Twentieth Century
*Side Show (if it's nominated)-I Will Never Leave You
*Something Rotten!-A Musical
*The Visit-Love and Love Alone

Wild Card: Since Mamma Mia! is gonna be closing in September, does anyone think they might do a special performance just like they did with Rent back in 2008?

"I've Got It All" is a perfect duet that immediately exposes the over-the-top characters of the two stars with the nutty lyrics flowing back and forth.

Stop your trying, I'm not buying.

Tragic story, lost your glory

Some Svengali, In an alley.

Shop girls ape you, Farmhands rape you.

Combined perhaps with the opening "On the Twentieth Century" number featuring the good title song and the tapping porters. Realistically, a duet is rare on the Tonys. They want to get everone involved.

My favorite would be "Veronique," which shows off KC in her transformation from lowly smurf to songstress to triple threat, ending in the short ensemble production number. Also with a sample of zany lyrics.

Veronique, she wink an eye;

Veronique, the bullets fly;

Veronique, she close the door

And start the Franco-Prussian war.

I was sort of hoping On the Twentieth Century would perform "Sign Lily Sign"/"Sextet" or whatever it's called now. It includes all of the major characters and gives Chenoweth a shining moment.

American In Paris will (and should) do "I Got Rhythm." Maybe a bit of the opening.

I think On the Town's performance will depend more on who, if anyone, is nominated.

I wonder if Cameron Mackintosh will have Ramin Karimloo perform "Bring Him Home" to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Les Miserables??!

Maybe it's because I get sentimental with music, but if there's any kind of Les Mis tribute, I'd like to see it be a past-present-future deal, where actors who have previously been involved with the show, are involved, or could same day perform. I know Les Mis and POTO have done that before at celebration performances.

But I don't think we'll see a 30th anniversary spot on the Tonys until 2017, if one were to happen. The Tonys are an American award show, so I think they'd wait until the American anniversary.

But I could be wrong.

I like "Welcome to our House" but I'm not sure if it would get me to buy tickets for that show - fine exposition but not one of the core emotional moments of the show. I would prefer one of the solo performances. Although, I feel like I often complain that solo performances seem to work better at the Tony awards for me than group performances.

Does "Yellow shoes" work outside of context? It's a catchy song, and (I imagine, given I haven't seen the show) pretty chilling with an understanding of the subtext of the song (i.e., it's not really about the shoes!). But without the subtext and taking it literally, it almost seems like a frivolous song from a 20s musical (I'm thinking of the first minute of "Fancy Dress" from the Drowsy Chaperone).

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

That's right! In the past, only shows nominated for Best Musical and/or Best Revival could perform. But since 2008, the Tonys always managed to find room for the other musicals that opened on Broadway during the season to perform (if they were still running).

This is definitely a silly question, but if a show is nominated but is now closed (say Honeymoon in Vegas) are they still able to perform or do they think it's not worth it since it's already closed?

Closed shows have performed before (Side Show, Parade, Pal Joey, Ragtime, The Scottsboro Boys, Follies, Leap of Faith, Bring It On, A Christmas Story, etc.). Others have not (Big River, Pacific Overtures, The Apple Tree, Finian's Rainbow, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, etc.).

If the entire scene in context can be done from AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, then the show stopper performance would be MAX VON ESSEN "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise".

I doubt The Last Ship would perform, but I would think if they did it would be "If You Ever Hear Me Talking to a Sailor"

I would like them to perform one if Alison's "confessional" songs. They're the ones that have received the most rapturous praise from the members of this board. They are also the two that best represent what the audience will be seeing when they shell out money for the Tony Award winner.

Let the audience savor a little of the joy in advance.

Do you think we'll be regaled with either of the two?

I agree. On the one hand Welcome to Our House is a logical choice because it gives such a broad introduction to the show. I don't think it would necessarily sell tickets, but I'm not sure which number would be most likely to have that effect with a TV viewing audience.

Raincoat of Love and Come to the Fun Home definitely radiate fun and upbeat energy that probably would play well on TV. Changing my Major to Joan out of context would feel strange. Ring of Keys and Days and Days are certainly outstanding solos. A part of me wonders if Flying Away might actually be the best compromise: beautiful music and lyrics, showcases all three Alisons. Hmm. Tough call.

"Come to the Fun Home" just begs to be featured on the telecast. It's quite literally a plea to come to the show. It's also the catchiest song of the show and features three really cute kids. I can see it being performed in a medley of sorts. I think a medley would actually work for Fun Home with Alison putting the moments in context as she does in the real show.

If I saw "Come to the Fun Home" on the Tony's, I'd think the show was a cross between MATILDA and A CHRISTMAS STORY. Very misleading, and even though After8 didn't mean it this way, a disservice to the adults in the show who steal our hearts with their more mature ballads. Gotta be a mix between the kids' numbers and a mature Alison piece.
