Last Thursday, nearing the end of my big flu bout, I decided I needed to get out and was imediately given comps for 'Thriller'! 'Give it a go' is my motto but as I stood just inside the door of the Lyric awaiting friends to arrive I just felt awful and before the 3rd and 4th members of our party arrived I was on my way home. Sounds like I missed a treat!
They were comps I had originally turned down but the friend I palmed them off to was stood up so I went to keep her company like the stupid b*st*rd I am. No good deed goes unpunished, as they say. The theatre was quite busy for a Tuesday night, although notably less so in the second half. People don't know what they're in for... as if by some miracle, it's already sold out most of its matinees.
Former Billy Elliot was not in it, it was some really ugly kid called Sterling who was appalling. His lower register sounded like Regan from The Excorcist and when he sang 'Ben', it sounded like he was having a seizure. The singers were sh*t, Denise Pearson sounded like a six year old, the dancers were like people dragged in off the street (including two ropey prostitutes), the Afro wigs didn't fit the middle aged men wearing them, the set was embarassing, the musicians were fat, the music sounded like midi versions of the songs and the whole thing was cheap, nasty with a putrid smell of bullsh*t. "Michael continues to inspires us all with his message of hope and peace." No he f*cking doesn't! He baffles us with his financial troubles, scary face, veiled and so-not-mixed-race children, his ridiculous siblings and his penchant for kiddy fiddling.
I'd rather watch seals being clubbed than sit through this pile of sh*t again.
No fair! I want comps and it's not offering via the seat-filling organisations. =( I don't have £30 to blow on a trainwreck like this - still trying to justify a tenner for Mandy Patinkin who I genuinely want to see.
Exedore, seriously, it's not worth it. But then again, I suppose it's a good thing to say you've seen. You might get a kiss from Carol Vorderman on Pride of Britain for having lived through it.
Oh dear- sounds like this will run and run!!! Bookings are supposed to be very, very good and could, and now probably will, extend past its original closing time of April. It's a catch 22 situation at The lyric then- 'Thriller continues for the Summer or Kenwright frightens off the tourists with 'Cant Smile Without You'! (He has yet to announce actually if 'CSWY' is coming back for its short tour followed by the Lyric?) I don't think I'd pay £10 for 90 mins of Mandy Patinkin either!
One of my first thoughts was that if Kenwright got his hands on Thriller, it might actually make an improvement. I don't reckon CSWY has a chance of going to the Lyric... it even got mocked in regional press. However, if a Kenwright car crash can erase some of the thick residue of Thriller that it currently clogging my memory, I would consider it a gift from God. I'm going to get on my knees tonight (not in that way) and pray to baby Jesus that I will forget all about Thriller Live in time for my birthday.
Seriously, as I said as I left the theatre, I could piss a better show than that, so I would strip the stage, strip myself and stand at the edge of the stage pissing on the audience. A vast improvement, I think you'll agree.
I saw this show way back in Portsmouth. I presume it hasn't changed much. The only lasting memory I have of it is that it was loud and expensive (for a regional show). I have seen worse, no wait I haven't. If you have two options for your evening, Thriller Live or being impaled on a spike at the Tower of London then go for the spike.
How this ever got a theatre in London I'll never know.
