This would be wonderful if they implement it effectively.
OMG it's about time! This is way overdue. Here's to hoping they get it going right away.

It's Ticketmaster...they'll probably charge another $5 for this option.

Just as long as they're not like some airlines and charge $100
I wonder though how producers feel about this? Do they want the public to be able to see how many seats are unsold? Would the ticket buyers have a negative reaction? ("This show must suck. Look at all those empty seats!)

Morosco, I am not sure. Keep in mind that there are more concerts and sporting events being sold through that site then there are Broadway shows.

I don't think all the seats go onsale at one time and the availability is staggered often, so a consumer is not technically always looking at the entire inventory. Sections are often held. I dont think it would a problem.
The Kennedy Center has been doing this for awhile now and I love it. I've never heard of it deterring anyone. It's especially helpful for groups, where you can pick and choose seats in a section together instead of being moved back in the house until an entirely empty row is found to accommodate 10 people.

I would also like this. However, for quite some time now, when it comes to buying tickets for a Broadway show, I just call and choose my seat that way - They'll check a section or two and help you find a suitable seat - I always have the seating chart in front of me and I've gone as far as to ask for certain seat numbers. I've also done this with Telecharge. Although I guess it depends on the person who takes the call.

Does anyone know when they plan to put this into effect? Hopefully soon.

This isn't much of an option for Audience Rewards members who want to earn points on eligible shows. Ticketmaster won't allow you to earn points when you call in. Only for internet orders.
According to a 12/14/09 Ticketmaster news release they plan to "roll-out the new maps continually throughout the upcoming year".

Stratford and Shaw Festivals up here in Canada have been doing this for awhile with no problems that I'm aware of. It's such a treat to be able to see exactly what's available. I'm annoyed when Telecharge offers me exactly the same seats in the same order no matter what date I plug in. I'm quite sure there are other seats available. Good for Ticketmaster.
Oh gosh, this would be so great. My local theater/symphony/ballet allows me to choose my seats online and it's always felt like I was stepping back a decade whenever I used Ticketmaster.
