The Oliviers are just plain weird sometimes. Sunny Afternoon, Jerry Springer, Kat and the Kings over Rent, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Me and My Girl over Les Mis...

Jeffery but in once's case it was nominated for an Olivier award and was up against BOM. I think the awards and nominations for both were very similar.

I wanna know if the Tonys and Oliviers had the same exact nominations in any given year, how often would the winners match?  Would the Oliviers pick An American in Paris over Fun Home?  Kinky Boots or Matilda? Avenue Q or Wicked?

Wow, that's a really good question, I wonder about that too. I just took a look through the wiki page for the Olivier awards, and Caroline, or Change beat Avenue Q when they were both nominated in 2007 (the other 2 shows were Spamalot and Porgy and Bess).

As it should have over here. Avenue Q was cute, imaginative, sweet, and had a wonderful little heart. Caroline, or Change was groundbreaking, gorgeous, and heartwrenching. Caroline (and Tonya) deserved that Tony.

I saw neither, unfortunately (due to my age at the time) but the recording of AQ was a favorite of mine for several years (though I grew a little tired of it) whereas C,oC I never grew attached to but I thought maybe I was too young for it. Now as an adult I've grown to appreciate Caroline and it's depth and have listened to it several times. I think Jeanine Tesori is so talented and as a huge fan of Angels in America I was delighted that Tony Kushner is also a terrific lyricist.

Also, that question about Avenue Q vs. Wicked that was originally posed would be moot because Wicked was never nominated for the Olivier for Best New Musical. Boo-hoo for them.

WICKED

For Broadway, it had 10 nominations, including Best Musical & 3 wins for Idina, Best Costume Design & Best Scenic Design.

For West End, only 4 nominations for Costume, Scenic, Lighting, & Director. No Best Musical nor Leading Actress for Idina.

A nomination from an organization does not set a precedent. It's an opinion, a choice.

Additionally, you are trying to compare apples to oranges. Different companies, different actors, often different directors and sometimes different set/costume design - not to mention the show across the pond are being considered against different seasons.

If it's a precedent, then the performance does really matter, just that you were lucky enough to get cast.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I totally agree. The only way you can really compare this is if they were opening at the same time with the same opposing shows to be nominated against with the same cast...which is impossible, Otherwise, it's just a bit of a fluke.

One show that wins just about everything at either B'way or West End - may have had little competition that same year so of course they win a lot.  While during a fabulous year, two or more shows are equally deserving but only one can win. An award is a great honor regardless, but when comparing year to year, it does not necessarily mean much..and certainly comparing two shows being presented in two entirely different situations does really make too much sense to me.

Additionally, there are different nominators with different tastes coming from different cultures.

The most interesting case to me was LEGALLY BLONDE, which had the same director and physical production as the Broadway production felt like a totally different show in the West End.  It was pure magic in the West End -- I think partly because of casting (Sheridan Smith was brill) and partly because the tone felt more like a satire and not just something spun up for a bubble gum MTV tourist crowd.
