Long before WICKED brought young girls to Broadway and "saved" it, there was a little show called ANNIE.

Ah... Love the Annie point... :claps:
It's absolutely true and was a much bigger phenomenon.

Yeah... I mean every little girl in America knows Tomorrow... its very brillant deduction... But Popular is also becoming big with girls who have seen Wicked. I have Google Alerts for Wicked, you will not know how many times it comes up with "Mary Andrews sang Popular from Wicked at this beauty pageant or this talent show"
Yes, but here's the thing, there was NO INTERNET BACK THEN, so imagine what it could have been. My point is that the *be all end all* of musical theater will never be the sole and exclusive domain of Wicked. Not by a long shot. And being that the strange trend of writing songs in ridiculously high keys was not the flavor du jour back then, many more little girls, no pun intended, could sing, emulate, imitate, Andrea McArdle and co. than will ever be able to do with Wicked. Hell, I'm no "Marty Thomas" but even I could hum a few bars of "Maybe" :)

Sometimes I feel like screaming WHAT THE HELL! They give WICKED fans a bad name... I mean I love WICKED but do we need 100 threads of OMG! IDINA SPIT HER GUM IN MY HAND! No... we dont...

Hehe. Glad I could make you laugh, clumsy.

Thank you, Al Dente.
hahahahaha this reminds me of something:
so my friend has her ring tone (dunno HOW but she does) set to the final belt of "Tomarrow" from the OBC. So her phone rings in this crowded store in NYC one day, and all these little girls go "oooooooooooooooooooh is that Wicked?!"
....somehow I just htink they were going crazy because Tomarrow sounds nothing like ANYTHING in Wicked.
But they were really little. So I *guess* it's excusable.
And actually, Tomorrow, vocally is a very difficult song to pull off correctly. And I'm not sure about mic'ing back in the mid to late 70s, but I know she could belt it out to the back row without amplification.
I was watching a video of Andrea McArdle singing and what I love is how she doesn't look like she's breathing AT ALL. But she hits every note perfectly. That's skill.
She's wonderful on the Broadway leading Ladies DVD - her rendition of Look for the Silver lining makes me teary-eyed every time I see it.
I worked with her in the early 90s and she is a DOLL - just the nicest young woman and so sweet - and very talented - extremely so.
for goodness sakes, read my replies to that message. I am not saying that it is the only show to bring people to Broadway. I'm not saying it is the best show on Broadway. I'm just saying that it is bringing alot of people to Broadway, so stop complaining about the Wicked threads!
And really, did you have to start a whole new thread for this?
Jera
p.s. Thanks for singling me out. What a wonderful welcome to this board.
You know what... I'm over it. I'm done with this discussion. I was wrong. Wicked didn't bring any new people to Broadway. People should continue to make personal attacks at Wicked fans. I am so sorry that I didn't realize how wrong I was.
How about we arrange a cd burning in times square? And while we're at it, we can burn a life sized replica of Idina belting at the Tonies.
:) I will never even mention the horrid "W" word again.

GREAT response. I'm serious....bravo.

well, I think Annie brought a much younger response to Broadway, but that's just what I think. Plus i like the music in Wicked way more. And for more current audiences, I think Wicked does what he/she said it did. I think its about time Broadway got noticed more and talk shows had on more Broadway actors. And maybe Wicked is helping to do that.
SallyBrown, your story made me laugh. :-P
And Jera, seriously good response. Someone mentions the word Wicked these days and its like a nuclear bomb went off. (Another reason why I'm not even going to get into the original debate. I want to have a fairly peaceful night.)
