Does anyone else think this would make an excellent musical? It's one of my favorites, and I thought about this because it was on Bravo today... I really think it would work!
I think it's a poor knock-off of The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert
Well, I considered that, but ultimately I found something here that I found lacking in Priscilla. Priscilla I thought was rather boring and a little pompous.
I have to agree, although as an Aussie it's a bit like spitting on the flag. Mind you, JULIE NEWMAR had about ten times the budget of PRISCILLA, but I never tire of watching it, especially John Leguizamo's sensational performance. I find PRISCILLA a little TOO vulgar. Call me old-fashioned, possums...
I love the movie, and I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about a stage musical version. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if they ARE talking about it, just very quietly.
i loved both movies - but john leguizamo is just so funny in julie newmar. wasn't guy pearce in priscilla? he's great too. john could easily play it on bway.
I was really disappointed with To Wong Foo - I felt it was another bad american version of a great foriegn film, namely, Pricilla. I enjoyed a couple of the performances, but felt that the film as a whole was a weak rip-off. When will Americans learn to leave great foriegn films alone?LOL...

i think it would make an excellent musical... john could reprise his role...
that movie was all about john leguizamo for me -- it's very simplistic and cliched -- i would rather see something more interesting & complex re: drag queens because they are almost passe now -- not that it couldn't be a romp in the right hands.
Will watch Too Wong Foo over Priscilla any day! It just might make a fun musical.
I hate To Wong Foo. I find it offensive. I prefer Priscilla. That'd be a better musical.

I think the material lends itself well to a musical adaptation -- but I ALSO feel Priscilla is a MUCH better film all around. The performances (other than John Leguizamo) just don't measure up to those in Priscilla. And it's funny to see Wesley Snipes and Patrick Swayze in drag, but I don't buy FOR A MINUTE that they are drag queens. The only thing that makes them a drag queen are costume, makeup, wig . . . nothing in their acting makes them believable.
I kind of disagree. While Patrick Swayze was not entirely believable, I was BLOWN AWAY by Wessley Snipes. I totally bought his whole performance, and his character was just all around well-thought out.
Would Julie Newmar play Julie Newmar? Or could Isabel Keating start a trend of playing gay icons?

julie newmar never makes an appearance. taboophan1, i completely agree... swayze is obviously not the greatest, but wesley snipes and john leguizamo both totally sunk themselves in i think... they both gave stellar performances in my opinion.
julie newmar never makes an appearance.
Julie Newmar appears at the very end of the movie to crown John Leguizamo in the big pageant finale.
Thanks NCGuy. I thought she made a brief appearance, but it's been so long since I've seen the movie, I wasn't sure.

oh yeah, sorry... i forgot she gave away the crown.
Don't know how this would do as a transfer to the stage. The subject, however, is very interesting to me since me and the screenwriter of this movie were in the same classes at school.
I thought it was a cute movie.
I perfer Priscilla, but I could do without the sappy ending in that film. Always mars what I believe is a fun, kinda gritty, film. Nothing beats the scene on the top of the bus, though.
Julie Newmar is fine, except I don't think it's very funny. I like all the perfomances (even Patrick Swayze), but I felt the script just let them down. Punch up the script, and it could be a terrific musical.
I problem with TO WONG FOO ... among many things was that they weren't drag queens they were transvestites. It had an amazing cast and I enjoy it but it just doesn't hold a candle to ... PRICILLA ... to me. Now, a great Aussie film to Broadway stage would be MURIEL'S WEDDING but then again, we already have MAMMA MIA! Scratch that. COSI would be a great stage musical as well.
i think i heard a PRISCILLA musical was in the offing...
So is a MURIEL'S WEDDING musical. I think the writers of PRODIGAL are working on it.
WonderBoy, I love COSI. Great show. Really touching, especially when you have great actors in those roles.
