Saw the show last week and the Tribune review is pretty fair, though maybe a little kinder than I would have stated. The tour production may be scaled down, but it is a stronger show than its Broadway predecessor. Especially the dragon. Better song and better staging remove the vapid spectacle and restore character to the character. I like some of the songs and the cast was wonderful, but the show still leaves me cold and I maybe laughed once. Love the film, but as a musical, it just doesn't work for me. Th most intriguing aspects of the show is the way it will occasionally flesh out more of the characters for us than in the film as in Big Bright Beautiful World, I Know It's Today and The Ballad of Farquaad, but they are too few and far between. The show loses me when it tries too hard to recreate the film.
