In addition to this season's LES MISERABLES revival, Cameron Mackintosh has plans to revive MISS SAIGON, BARNUM, and OLIVER!

Posted: 6/18/13 at 11:13pmI'm most excited for a revival of OLIVER. It's one musical that I have not seen on stage. The excellent Oscar-winning film introduced me to the show, and while I groan at having yet another Broadway show filled with kids, I'd be the first one to buy a ticket to a good stage production of OLIVER!.

Trinity Rep in Providence will be doing it next February, the beloved Richard Jenkins, former artistic director of the company, will be returning to direct. I too have never seen it staged and will look forward to that production.
Oliver!

I did see OLIVER when it was revived at the London Palladium. I think it featured Jonathan Pryce in the lead.

I wish he'd put his immediate focus on these three productions instead of another LES MIZ retread, but hopefully they will all come to New York in due time!
Christopher Fitzgerald as Barnum is a particularly exciting prospect to me.

Posted: 6/19/13 at 12:09amIt seems like Macintosh has way to much on his plate. He should just focus on getting Miss Saigon made into a film.

Here's Jonathan Pryce as Fagin in a Royal Variety Performance from OLIVER (circa 1994)

Posted: 6/19/13 at 12:48amSurely Oliver! will just be a slightly revised version of that Sam Mendes production with Pryce that CamMac did. He's already restaged it in London, I believe twice, as well as tours, and I can't see that changing... (It's pretty good, from what I remember as a teen in London though at times felt overblown to me--Bart did some new material.)

I love Oliver! Saw the London revival and it was amazing...something like 45 kids on stage for "Food Glorious Food".
Great story, great songs. I'm looking forward to Broadway.

"I love listening to Jonathan in the recording. He supposedly didn't want to do it at first, does anyone know why?"
If I remember correctly, he did not want to do it because it was something he did not seem himself doing. But his kids would not stop bugging him about it and his kids told him to do it; so he did. I remember reading that in an interview once...if anyone can correct me on this, please do so.

Few bits incorrect from Riedel. Jersey Boys isn't moving to the a piccadilly until Mid March 2014, its booking to first Sat in March at the Edward where it will close and the Piccadilly isn't going to be dark, Dirty Dancing is coming back to London running from July to Feb.
Miss Saigon isn't likey to open until May 2014, so not end of this year.
Barnum is going to The Geilgud from November unless it gets dreadful reviews, but ticket sales are doing very well in Chichester.
Oliver! Coming back to Broadway will more than likely be the recent Drury Lane production which toured the UK very recently. Expect Samanatha Barks to be Nancy....

I'm up for an "Oliver" revival. The only down side is that I don't suppose they're bringing Rowan Atkinson over.
I so wanted to see him as Fagin in London.

I know that towards the end of his run in La Cage, Douglas Hodge was asked about future projects and one thing he mentioned was Barnum. I forget if it was a dream role or something being workshopped.
I can see him in that role.

I did see the recent London revival of Oliver and loved it. Rowan Atkinson was a decent Fagin until he broke out a Mr. Bean bit during Reviewing the Situation, but Jodie Prenger was perfection as Nancy.
I saw 'Oliver' when it came to Los Angeles a few years ago. It was long and the actors all seemed very bored. I don't think we need an Oliver revival yet...
Sounds like you saw that lousy non-equity tour from about 5 or 6 years ago. Oliver hasn't been revived on Broadway in almost 30 years, so perhaps a revival of a good production is exactly what's needed.

Didn't Cameron want to bring Oliver ages ago but decided against it due to the costs? I think his production of My Fair Lady would fare well on Broadway.
I guess Barnum and Miss Saigon will be Broadway bound should they be successful in the West End.
