Posted: 3/24/18 at 11:30pmThe Follies performance was an absolute disappointing disaster. Almost any other song would have been a better choice.

Completely agree. I saw the Tony awards performances of both of those before seeing them live and felt pretty "meh" about them. When I saw them live, those numbers were dazzling.

Also, I’m taking this time to atone for the negative thoughts I had when I heard Fun Home was doing Ring of Keys. I don’t think I’ve ever been more wrong!
Right there with you on Ring of Keys - everyone was so excited but I thought it was an AWFUL choice. Realized I was wrong the moment they started!
i also agree that “If I HadMy Time Again” would have been a great choicefor Groundhog Day, but I assume they wanted to showcase Andy Karl.

I always find it interesting when a musical performs after it has closed earlier in the season (whether or not it is a limited run in the case of revivals) but is still nominated and is able to perform. I'm sure a lot of things come in to play when that is the case and that limits the numbers able to be performed (set pieces being available, actors even being in the NYC area in June if they've moved on to other projects).
I think that explains a lot of performance choices from shows that have closed:
Ragtime 2010: Back to Before just required Christine Noll in costume and projections of backdrops on screens instead of sets that may not be available anymore - kind of easy to put together when the whole production is not down the street anymore.
Follies 2012: Again, just Danny Burstein and 2 members of the chorus in costume for the song instead of getting the whole cast together. I remember Danny Burstein saying on the red carpet that he took a red eye from California just for the performane so getting the whole cast that has moved on may not have been as easy, even though Bernadette Peters was still able to introduce, and the rest of the cast that was nominated was there in the audience for their categories. You know what, never mind, why not have the rest of them sing if they were all there.
That's why I think the Bring It On and Scottsboro Boys performances were so impressive because they still got the entire ensemble back together even though they didn't all have to be in the area at that time and didn't have a show to promote anymore.
What is a tony awards performance after marketing for a running show is out of the picture? Other than an honor to be part of that telecast in the first place and a way to mark the production in history. Could market the show for regional / school productions I guess?
Falsettos did a great job last year of capturing the tone of a show that closed.

Aside from Jesse L Martin's voice (that last note!?!), who thought "Razzle Dazzle" would be appropriate for a Memorial tribute, especially the "how can they spot ya got no talents" verse?

Is there a backstory? I don't recall anything being botched about it.

A lot of times, though, they get it right when showcasing a vignette from a musical on The Tony Awards.
GRAND HOTEL's "Let's Take a Glass" with Brent Barrett & Michael Jeter was positively delightful. Also from that year "What You Don't Know About Women" from CITY OF ANGELS was pretty terrific.
More recently, the portion from JERSEY BOYS performed on The Tony Awards made me go right out & purchase the CD.
And the dancing from PROMISES, PROMISES (2010 revival) was awesome, incredible, wonderful, and more. Maybe I liked it so much because I was born in 1962 & found it relatable -- also I'm a huge Burt Bacharach fan.
I guess the scene from BRING IT ON is the latest number I went back & played over & over & over.
(Though I will admit some years there isn't anything that grabs me on the show.)

They were out of time, but personally I thought it was definitely the right song and the performance, despite some flaws - was incredible.

Yes, I had the same thought. I remember being blown away and it got me in a seat too. Other than people later commenting that Alice Ripley came in a little late on "You Don't Know" (or early-I can't remember which-and I did not notice at the time), I watched what I thought were flawless performances. I recall what was slightly botched was Carrie Fisher's otherwise humorous intro to the piece--she mis-read a sentence. I also believe Tom Kitt said in NYT article written when N2N had recouped that the audience created by that exposure was a turning point in the show's financial success,so it clearly did impact many people watching in a positive way.

I actually thought the Waitress choice was great. Before that Tony performance Waitress was barely on my radar but after hearing "She Used to Be Mine" I immediately wanted to see it. It;s a great 11 o'clock number.

Agreed! I wasn’t interested in Waitress at all until the Tony performance. Jessie Mueller blew me away.

I agree whole-heartedly about Groundhog Day. They shot themselves in the foot with that song choice. It completely baffled me."
I loved it. "Seeing You" is perhaps my favorite song in the show.
