Of course it's not always a problem, some years people debate other topics...such as...why did Brian Stokes Mitchell lose out to Harvey Fierstein?

And everybody loves Hah-vey, bythesword. And the show Mitchell was in was kind of...meh. Hairspray was the big winner that year. It wasn't like this year, when there was no designated juggernaut and people from weaker shows had a better chance to grab prizes.
Oh I was just joking, I wasn't attempting to start a huge debate on the topic.

Too late. *evil laugh*
Just kidding. I take my natural tendency to take things literally to the extreme when I haven't slept in 20 hours.

Well if I knew you were going to take it seriously surely I would have taken the time to write some big thesis as to why I felt BSM should have won, just for the pure sake of getting a reaction.
But, alas, I identify with the sleep deprived...this time anyway *hute, cute, girly, grin*
plus, if anyone should have beaten harvey it was antonio
I agree with you nystateomind04, Antonio had the best shot of beating Harvey. Didn't they tie for the Drama Desk Award?
Um PLUM...Idina Menzel is not my favorite....by any means. If she's inconsistent with Defying Gravity...well then I guess she'll work on that...its certainly not a song ANYONE can sing every day, but she DOES. Im sure it has it's off moments...but all Im saying is I've heard more consistent and powerful work from Menzel and not Pinkins.
But whatever...I can't say I had a favorite in this category...ideally I think Marin Mazzie should have won just for walking the face of the earth....she's good at that...but hey! Whaddaya gonna do!?

Sorry for misinterpreting you, Brodybaby; it just sounded odd that you were excusing Menzel's being worn out by "Defying Gravity" while excoriating Pinkins for being worn out by "Lot's Wife." If we're going to excuse them both, then it's just a matter of taste. Disagreement is natural. :)
I am honestly very happy that Idina won, although at the time of the awards, I would have liked to see Stephanie win, just cause I thought it would be a funny upset.

And hey, one positive thing about Tonya Pinkins not winning- Michael Reidel was wrong, and he owes Bernadette Peters lunch (not that she'll take it). Updated On: 7/29/04 at 03:32 PM

In the words of Richard Wright "I heard the weather was gonna be bad but I didn't hear anything about a **** storm!"
Well so much for all those happy "I love this message Board posts"
Judging from your name Ragtime....I'm assuming that's your idea of a great musical...I agree.
But who the hell are you to come in and criticize a very large amount of people who enjoy WICKED. I know we should FEEL and be challenged by theatre. I agree it's important for it to be intellectual. But what the hell is wrong with just ENJOYING a show and allowing it to ENTERTAIN. Don't worry about it.
If you don't like it...fine...don't go..but I am pretty sure the ticket sales won't suffer due to your decision to boycott.
Calm down.
Idina Menzel is talented otherwise I doubt she'd have the career she's had. Im not even going to get into her voice or how its been or why it was what it was on the Tony's....I don't think anyone should make exscuses for anyone. The point there , and I think you'll agree..is that You're on Broadway, get a teacher , get a Doctor, rest, study ...do what you gotta do because at 120 a ticket you better be good and prove yourself. But she screwed up, I think maybe we might all be a little nervous infront of 6,000 of our peers and family and HUSBAND and toughest critics as well as a television audience...point is....
SHE WON
GET OVER IT!
This whole debate just needs to end...we were discussing who we thought should win MONTHS before the Tonys, and now they've happened and people are still arguing about who SHOULD'VE won. Just let it go. Idina won, and that's not going to change no matter how much you hate it. It's time to MOVE ON. Updated On: 7/29/04 at 04:37 PM

The past reflects on the present.
But in the case of this thread, I think we've worn out all the arguments.
I just have to say that I really resent people saying that people, who like Wicked are stupid, I have a degree (cum laude) from one of the best Universities in the country, and I think that it is brilliant. There is so much hidden meaning in there, and I really don't see how anyone can not see that (I'm not saying not liking it b/c that's opinion). Also, on some nights Idina does scream, but going from reviews of the show, I'm one of the lucky few that has seen her on nights that she has. Usually (and the 2nd time that I saw it, which was by far the best of the ones I've seen), she doesn't, which is why she won the Tony. Her acting is impecible (sp?) every night, and she really deserved this. I haven't seen Caroline b/c I can't afford the tickets, so I can't say if Tonya did, and as many pointed out Idina sucked at the Tonys too, so I won't go by that, but in her own right, Idina is really a fantastic performer.
Please. Enough with giving your resume.
It's tiring.
Well, if people would stop posting that only stupid people would like Wicked...
I can't even begin to comprehend why you would take someone like that seriously. Or why it even matters.
It's a f*cking message board. You're starting to look foolish.
B/c people actually believe it, and it pisses me off.
People believe that aliens have taken them up in ships and probed their poopers. What's your point?
Tousche (sp?) But, think about it from my standpoint, I'm sitting here having worked my butt off to be where I am in society, and people actually believe that I must be stupid to like Wicked as much as I do. Maybe it's b/c I'm young, but it's more than annoying, and I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels that way. I know that a lot of my classmates (many that did better than I) feel how I do about this show. Updated On: 7/29/04 at 05:47 PM
Ragtime322 - "Idina can't act, she can't dance and she can barely sing."
That's one of the silliest comments I've ever read. Sorry you didn't like Wicked, and no one says you have to, but I get the impression you know little about singing and acting, if you think Idina cannot do either. I've heard comments where people say she "screams", yet no one has ever given a specific instance of this occurring. You say it is at the end of Defying Gravity? Have you ever heard a scream before? And you call anyone who sees Wicked "unintelligent"? That would indicate that if you have seen the show, then you include yourself among the "unintelligent". If you haven't seen the show, then you have nothing with which to judge Idina's performance in it. She was quite good in the show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't think it is the best show I've ever seen or even the best show on Broadway, but it was fun. Putting others down because they enjoy something you don't FOR ANY REASON is just snobbery. And everyone knows that those who care to be musical theatre snobs are "unintelligent".
Either way, your post is far more unintelligent than anyone who chooses to be entertained by something they enjoy.
PS - If Schwartz did not do anything original, then please tell me what show the score originally came from. I don't think it's a great score, but I'm not stupid enough to make such a careless comment.
She screams a little bit at the end of "Defying Gravity" and a tiny bit on "No Good Deed" on the CD. On 7/3, she did a lot of screaming (much like at the TONYS), and the first time I saw her, a little bit. So, while I don't think this is typical b/c according to Idina in some interviews, two times I've seen it are the times when she's the worst (when she's been out or the theatre has been dark on Monday), I'm sure that other people have had this experience. I bet that's where they're coming from.
Just for the record, there really aren't that many hidden meanings in Wicked. The musical is far more obvious than the novel. Even the ending was Disney-fied for family audiences. Thought the story was watered down, it didn't make the show any less fun to watch. Jarico and I had a great time and I would see it again. The tour is already scheduled to hit Chicago next May.
