Not having seen VW, I do understand what others are saying about the character of Sister Aloy...I'm not even gonna try to spell it.
Jones, like Pinkins last year, may just suffer from the fact that they are performing characters that, in many ways, are not entirely sympathetic. Like Pinkins, Jones is giving a nearly perfect reading of this character...she's doing EVERYTHING right. But, in the end, that may play against her.
"I'm so looking forward to a time when all the Reagan Democrats are dead."
Jerby - I'm not 'doubting' Ms. Jones' nomination at all. If anything, if her performance is everything everyone says it is, she deserves recognition for making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Thank you, Poppy. As I keep saying, I think the woman is absolutely revelatory in this role. Whatever you may think of her (as she is hard and calculated in her dealings with her peers), she is brilliantly portraying this character. And those who find the character one-dimensional...I disagree. I think she has a SURPRISING amount of depth and affection for the children we never see in this play, given her complete shock and dismay over the mother's lack of caring about the bigger issue at hand...and her very subtle breakdown at the end is absolutely brilliant. And completely in character. I think Turner is WONDERFUL as Martha...but I never can quite shake that I'm watching Kathleen be Kathleen onstage, not Martha.
I am thrilled that Laura Linney received a nomination, she truly deserves it. I'm slightly torn between her and Mary Louise Parker for who I want to win.
I agree, pop, and I actually felt the same way when I saw Pinkins last year..and we all know how that turned out.
Personally, I thought Jones was wonderful (and I did, in fact, have a few problems with DOUBT). She was terrific. But I'm also someone who believes that Richardson's maligned performance in STREETCAR was the absolute revelation this year. THAT was magic.

Having seen all the nominated musicals except Sweet Charity, and almost all of the others (haven't seen Brooklyn or All Shook Up, yet)... I give the male actor nod, easily, to Norbert Leo Butz. His was the most exuberant performance of the season. I hope the Tony voters see it that way, too. I'd also vote for Sutton Foster, who was absolutely perfect in Little Women. Heck, I didn't even want to see the show initially... I'm not crazy about sentimental shows... but I wound up loving it. And I'm sorry it otherwise got snubbed.
Gregory Jbara Carla Gugino Christian Borle Adam Arkin Jonathan Hadary and/or Curtis Holbrook and/or Mark Price of All Shook Up (Price the most) Brenda Blethyn
You could also make a good argument for some others in Spelling Bee
And Daniel Davis deserved a nom as much as Gary Beach but I guess that was impossible
I am so happy that Mary-Louise Parker's brilliant turn in "Reckless" was remembered. Ditto Laura Linney. And I'm totally rooting for "The Pillowman" (esp. Billy) to win everything.
But where the Hell is Carla Gugino? They nominated Dana Ivey, who walked through "The Rivals", over her? SNUB OF THE YEAR!
"Lithgow and Beach are two of the most charming and best-liked people in the business. That helps."
Which just goes to prove that the Tony's are more and more a popularity contest and less an actual acknowledgement of excellence in the theatre. All you had to do was see Norbert up there with Lithgow and Davis (PARTICULARLY Davis) up there with Beach to see that neither JL nor GB were giving Tony-worthy performances. They're nice guys and their performances were good. They just don't deserve a Tony nomination.

And since I just found out who Michael McGrath is (I read it and was like, "Ummmm...I didn't even know that was the name of someone in the show)...all I can say is "HUH??!!??" I think Christian definitely deserved a spot over him.
Also, Maureen McGovern?
I'm really excited for Doubt though, I'm crossing my fingers for Adriane.
But seriously....Mamie, agree all the way. They're nice guys, but those are not performances worthy of a Tony nomination. Can I also throw Tim Curry in there as a case-in-point? The only problem is I have no one on that stage to compare him to and say "HE should be nominate for Best LEAD Actor in a Musical..." Sigh.
Andrew, tonight isn't about you! It isn't even about me!!! - [FD]
I was soooooo happy about the nominations! Sutton's nominated for leading actress~! AH!! I ran off the bus and burst through my front doors shouting "Suttons Nominated!!"
Oh Im so Happy! Indeed!

*cries* No Raul!?!?!?!?! I couldn't stay home this morning but made my history teacher let me watch in class...RAUUUUUULY!!! I actually like all the guys nom'd for lead actor too, which makes it hard to complain...but it's RAUL! yay for Chris Sieber :)
Has anyone noticed there is a high possibility this year of a three-way split among Musical, Book and Score. This only occurred once before in 1974 with:
Musical - Raisin Book - Candide Score - Gigi
It could easily happen this way:
Musical - Spamalot Book - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Score - The Light in the Piazza
That is actually a very likely scenario. Interesting......

I can't believe that Richardson was overlooked. What a calculated kick in the pants (and poor Ryan having the awkward situation of being the only one in the cast nominated for her lovely performance). Or that Goldblum was overlooked in favor of Crudup. I can't believe both Carla Gugino and Lisa Gay Hamilton were snubbed, but that really bizarre, clueless performance from Goldenhersh was nominated. The mind reels. But I consider most Tony decisions to be about producer pressure and box office.
No, John Lithgow deserved that nomination. And he can't help it that he is a nice person.
Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."
I thought Lithgow was good...but Norbert was easily the star of that show. Now if Norbert leaves and Lithgow stays...then you might see the replacement be unable to outshine Lithgow..
