All in all I think the right ones have been nominated. Just one thought: I know The Frogs was anything but a good show - I think it is the first time (or at least the first time for ages) that a Sondheim score has NOT been nominated for best score...
And a question: would it be possible to have more then four nominations per catagory? (So Chitty could have gotten a score nod as well)
I really hope Norbert wins!!! I love Gary Beach too, but he already has a very well-deserved Tony, as does Sutton. But it would be great to see her win again.
Can P. Rashad win in the leading actress category after her last year winning?
Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."
still bummed for BKLYN. I liked it despite its weaknesses and think that costumes, Ramona Keller at minimum should have gotten a nod. Think the producers' choice of Eden as the way to market the show was just not smart. Too bad.
VB: Mr. Wonka, my name is Violet Beauregard...
WW: I don't care.
I am VERY surprised that neither Richardson nor Lange got a nod. You would think their names alone would get them recognition. But the actresses nominated are all well- deserving. Glad to see Linney (a terrific actress) and Parker up there. But I really am dying to see Kathleen Turner walk away with that award. No one deserves it more than she.

Why wouldn't Rashad be able to win two years in a row? Why else would she be nominated if she couldn't win?
Mind you the race is probably between Jones and Turner, but in theory at least, Rashad COULD win.

If indeed the best actress in a play comes down to Turner and Jones, I hope Turner gets it. As wonderful as Jones is, I'm sure, I just don't see the roles as having any comparison.
Stephen Sondheim's score for A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM was not even nominated for a Tony despite it raking in a handful of awards, including Best Musical.
Sad but true.
Itty Bitty Geisha?
Toyland?
Gypsy Pasadoble?
Just a few popular favorites...
That's just how tough this year is--so many deserved people were not nominated because the competition was just too fierce. But, ultimately, YEA for a year on Broadway that was so rich in good plays and musicals and performances and designs.
There are many who feel that Ms. Rashad is even more deserving of the Tony for GEM than for RAISIN--as she astonishingly topped herself. However, I have a feeling this is going to be a night for DOUBT, and that Ms. Jones will be up on that stage collecting her second Tony.
While Turner is giving a remarkable performance as Martha, arguably one of the meatiest AMerican theatre roles, Jones is absolutely revelatory in Doubt. Pardon my pun, but you never doubt Jones' character's motivation, purpose, meaning, or anything in between. It's breathtaking. I want to see this play again simply to watch her match up with the astonishing Adriane Lenox, who earned a well-deserved nomination (and possible win!) for appearing in one scene and not only holding her own with Jones, but equaling her and creating a full-realized character in about 15 minutes of stage time. Absolutely thrilling.
bway - I'm certain that Ms. Jones is complete in her realization - she is an astonishing actress. But the character is written as having no arc - she feels one way and never wavers. I just can't compare that to the rollercoaster that is Martha.
I'm not suprised-but angry to see that little women only got a best actress nom..it wasn't the best show but I think it DEFINETLY deserved a sceninc design nom *the set was the friggin coolest set ever-so perfect* and maybe orchestrations and such..
and BORLE!! come on. I didn't see the show but everyone I know that has seen the show has said the same thing: BORLE ROCKED!
Does anyone hate me for not really caring that Maureen didn't get a nom? I thought Sutton was the star..she stole the light from everyone else.
and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...
DGrant--you saw the LA production of DOUBT--not the NYC production. You could speak of the script all you care, but until you have seen the NYC performances, how can you possibly know what is on that stage and behind these nominations?
The fact is that whether or not Ms. Jones' character as written has as much arc as Martha is beside the point. Cherry has created a masterful performance--and Ms. Turner, though great overall, has not. Much of the "great arc of Martha" is not present.
EXACTLY, DGrant!!! you took the words right out of my mouth! Jones' character simply has NO arc. With all do respect to Ms. Jones, Martha is a character that is all over the map, and Turner pulls off the daunting role with expert aplomb. It is a three hour show, and Kathleen Turner shows such a great amount of depth. She MUST win!

I'm a little late jumping in on this, but does anyone else think that the leads in Spamalot were good, but not necessarily Tony worthy? I saw the show over the weekend, and while thoroghly enjoying it, I didn't think that the show on the whole was worthy of 14 nominations. My favorite performance in the show was Borle....who was snubbed. I love Hank Azaria.....lead? I don't think so. Just another year where I feel the Tony's don't really reflect those who are deserving. hmmmm Bernadette/MArissa....yeah...that was the moment I truely lost faith in the Tony's. And this just kinda confirms that.
Princeton78, there could be surprises, but newspapers down here in Atlanta have been raving about "Doubt." and to all of you aging 70's people (of which I am one): who would have ever thought Maureen Mcgovern (she of "The Morning After" fame, I presume) would be receiving so many raves? But I've always liked "The Morning After." Now if only the underrated Helen Reddy could make a comeback.
A few of the noms I can see may make you feel that way jakebloke, but for the most part they are well spread out to many deserving candidates. Now if Spamalot sweeeps, then I will give up hope.
