I think these nominations REALLY just blew the musical acting categories into mostly wide-open races.
I think Clark, Butz and Fogler are near-locks. Ramirez has the toughest job as she could easily fall behind O'Hara or Maxwell. But the others are, I think, givens now.
So what shows were completely snubbed?
little women. I think it should have AT LEAST been nominated for best scenic design...

Nothing for Maureen McGovern? Very disturbing.

Completely shut out:
-- The Frogs
-- All Shook Up
-- The Glass Menagerie
-- Steel Magnolias
-- Julius Caesar
-- Brooklyn
-- Good Vibrations
-- Dracula

I think I'm going to cry. Good Vibrations got no nominations, meaning there's no chance at a cast recording

Well obviously I agree with alphieboy and wendy72 in wishing that
Gregory Jbara had been nominated. I'm happy for all the DRS folks who were nominated and wish them all the best. 11 nominations is great! Also congrats to all the nominees.
Oh btw, the email of the nominations announcements just landed in my email box, nearly 2 hours after the announcement broadcast.
Sure glad I wasn't depending on email for the news! LOL
Barb
The Borle omission was simply wrong. He truly delivers the best male performance in the show both in acting and singing followed quickly by Azaria's fearless antics. Had Azaria been categorized as Featured, then he probably could have snagged a win, but he hasn't a chance against Butz. Personally, I considered Curry to be the only lead in the show, but I know this is really just a game for the Tony committee and the producers and the categories have little meaning (Like, Andrea McArdle played a FEATURE role in Annie. The f*cking musical is NAMED AFTER HER CHARACTER!). Anyhoo... Am I the only one who thinks Spamalot has a shot at orchestrations? I think the orchestrations are wonderful for Piazza, but Hochman's (3 previous Tony noms) Spamalot orchestration does have that full lush traditional Broadway sound that voters are so fond of and then there's Harold Wheeler with Scoundrels, with six previous nominations. Piazza probably has it, but I would not be too surprised to see it go to Spamalot or Scoundrels.
Don't cry, timote!

Folks,
I enjoyed Little Women more than most around here, but I think it got the nomination it deserved.
As far as set design, sitting inthe third row, it was uncomfrtable spacially and I didn't like the scaffolding in the play within a play sequence.
Maureen was competent but not spectacular. Sometimes you are handcuffed by a dull part and clearly the book for Little Women favored the daughters.

Happy and surprised for Gary Beach!
A little surprised that All Shook Up was locked out (with the good things I've heard about the performances, sets, and dances)
Though not surprised, FROGS was shut out as well, even for best score. I have been listening to Spamalot today and I can tell you without a doubt that I will listen to FROGS a LOT more than Spam in my lifetime.
Missing noms in my opinion:
Maureen McGovern
Raul Esparza
something for Little Women (we're having another Victor/Victoria) and even a nod to Eden. if she were in the lead category I bet she would have forced out Erin Dilly. not that it matters because Clark will walk away with that one.
Winning Predictions:
Spamalot (Musical)
Light or DRS (score)
Butz/Clark (leads Musical)
Jerry Mitchell (chor)
Spam (direction - c'mon its Mike Nichols)
Light or Pac Over (Orchestrations)
At least we're guaranteed 6 musical performances on the Tony's! My DVD will be ready! :)
*gives Emcee a little hug*
You know it's not going to end his career, right, hun? And don't forget, he's been nominated before. Someday, a better part will come along for him. I think, in the meantime, Raul is probably sobbing all the way into his paycheck.
Hi MisterMatt...
In case no one told you yet...
Andrea McArdle was nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical way back when. She lost (and rightly so) to her co-star, Dorothy Loudon (Miss Hannigan).
If someone already let you know, I apologize for the repeat.
Elphaba, singing apparently isn't a prerequisite for a musical nomination. John Lithgow also cannot sing and not only was he nominated, he won in this category for Sweet Smell of Success. Same thing with Lauren Bacall, Gwen Verdon, Harvey Fierstein, Carol Channing and others I am sure.

Still no Rath - I really hope she's not out hunting down the nominating committee!
Exaclty Bwaysinger...
I too wish Raul had been nominated, but I'm sure he's comforted by the fact that he's playing the leading role in a current big-money making show. I have no doubt that his time will come.
*Still upset over the Magnolias snub...and their numbers aren't nearly as good as Chittys.*
baddadnpa: All of those people sing, they may not sing beautifully but I actually perfer their performances to some "singers" on Broadway
The difference is that Azaria has no singing part at all, Hyde Pierce would easily fit in the category with those performers, and I think was more deserving of the nomination. Although I really liked some of Azaria's character work.
I think most of the acting noms were well-deserved. It's actually just really telling that, for the first time in a few years, there were a WEALTH of really worthy choices for nearly every category. Again, the only weak category, I feel, was Best Actress in a Musical. And it's only weak because there were only 7 or 8 valid nominees. There are a few worthy winners in all categories, though.

I'm very disappointed to see that Natasha Richardson was left out of the bunch. Oh well. Best Actress in a Musical, Lead and Featured, should be exciting.
Do you think that Spamelot will pull something like the Producers did (nothing close to it but like winning the majority) or will the better canidate DRS win what it deserves?
My Predictions (But I hope that some are wrong)
Musical:Spam (DRS should win)
Score: Spam (DRS should win)
Book: Spam (DRS should win)
Chor: DRS (Over La Cage but either way Jerry Mitchell gets the Tony)
Direction: Spam (this one they do deserve)
Lead Actor: Norbert Leo Butz
Lead Actress: Sutton Foster
Featured Actor: Marc Kudisch (I pray)
Featured Actress: Sara RAmierz
Dont get me wrong, I loved spamelot but I think DRS was way better.

I think it's kind of sad that All Shook Up did not get nominated for anything. But I was suprised to count the 14 nominations for Spamalot!
I personally don't think there will be a repeat of "The Producers" for a while. That year, there were obvious better nominees in many categories, and since then, "The Producers" has proven itself to be mediocre-to good without Lane and Broderick rather than "THE BEST MUSICAL EVER!" :-/ I'm still mad about that year.

Sorry if this has been asked, but will Pacific Overtures perform on the telecast?

I REALLY hope Spam doesn't take best new musical. I would love to see it go to Piazza or DRS.
I'm sad Christian wasn't nominated, and I'm completely and utterly heart broken to see Raul was not.
scooter - You are absolutely right. I'm a dork. I always think McArdle was nominated for Featured for some reason. I think it's because I think of Loudon's role as Featured, which makes sense. Loudon is fantastic and deserved a Tony, but as Featured, not Lead. Just like Daisy Eagan should have been nominated as a Lead for Secret Garden. The whole star-status above-title thing is so ridiculous when they are obviously playing supporting roles. That's what I meant by the Annie comment. How is Mary Lennox a Featured role in The Secret Garden? If she wasn't the lead female, then who was? According to the Tonys, there was no female Lead in Secret Garden, which is asinine.
