1. Borle was indeed robbed, but McGrath was my favorite. 2. No one should be surprised at Bill Irwin. As a quiet man undone, he gave me the creeps. 3. Let's not forget that Victoria Clark (say hello to your Tony baby!) could not be so brillant without Kelli and Matthew. All three deserving.
ehh. It was a total draw - obviously they're making a statement toward the jukebox musicals this year. Honestly, I don't really think Erin Dilly's performance is Tony nod material, but other than she and Jenn, who else was going to fill that spot? Politics probably dictated why Erin got it.
Are you surprised there is no recognition for Brooklyn or Julius Ceasar? They were not exactly raved about. I totally agree it as about even between Erin and Jen and politics made the difference. Jukebox musicals are not what the critical side of the Broadway community want to see.
I think a reason they didn't give Maureen McGovern a nomination was because she signed a contract months ago to leave the Broadway production this summer to lead the touring production. And I love Christian to death, but Christopher has been on Broadway for a much longer time and he's never gotten any recognition up until now. So there ya go.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

I believe THE FROGS is the first "new" Sondheim score since COMPANY to not even receive a nomination. (Even MERRILY got its only nomination for the score.)
Otherwise it seems the 4 nominated musicals were pretty much as expected.
I am glad that the "jukebox" shows didn't get any nominations. If they ever should it should be under teh special theatrical event and not for Best Musical.
The musical awards were split as follows:
14 - Monty Python's Spamalot 11 - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels 11 - The Light in the Piazza 6 - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee 5 - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 4 - La Cage aux Folles 4 - Pacific Overtures 3 - Sweet Charity
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
first of all, yay for sutton foster, even though it's going to be tight.
borle and mcgovern - nothing?? i have to jump on the "wtf" bandwagon in regards to them being robbed david hyde pierce not being nominated was another suprise.
PLUS... i didn't get tickets
what a disapointing morning... Updated On: 5/10/05 at 09:40 AM
So bummed for David Hyde Pierce, and Julius Caesar. I thoght that Denzel would have at least got a nom. Happy Tuesday all.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

Im quite content with the nominations....the only thing im upset about is Maureen McGovern and Romona Keller not being nominated...o well....also I think Tobin Ost should have been nominated for his costumes, though simple, they were quite creative :)
I'm way down here in Atlanta Ga. and I have not seen the play. But is "Spamalot" really all that great? I was surprised at all the nominations. And folks they might as well go ahead and give the tony for best play to "Doubt." They don't even need to wait for the ceremony. It is as sure a thing as Elaine Stritch win was a couple of years ago.
Im suprised that BKLYN got no tech noms. I thought they praticly HAD the costumes trophy. Im pissed about maureen. Christina doesnot deserve that nom. Alot of people got robbed at the sake of getting ratings for the tele cast
gravity, that really does not seem to be the case with these nominations in most categories. No Denzel, or john C. Reily who many though would get "attention" noms, ditto with Lange all of which were (in my opinion) rightly left out. Christina was assured of the nom, there are not many people in the Best Actress in a Musical category. Brooklyn was going to win nothing, it could have had the most singularly innovative costumes ever and it would still be out.
surprised at Hank Azaras nomination....while I found him funny, he cannot sing, and I didn't consider that role a lead male role....I could see maybe featured actor...but even so, the man cannot sing.
and while I loved Spamalot, I'm not sure I agree that it's nomination for best musical makes sense......
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story...
