Arkin made his Broadway debut in From the Second City in 1961. He later acted in Luv and Enter Laughing (for which he won a Tony for Best Featured Actor), before turning to directing. Among his directorial efforts were the original production of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys, the short-lived Kaye Ballard musical Molly, and Elaine May's Taller Than a Dwarf starring Matthew Broderick & Parker Posey.
He won an Oscar for his role in Little Miss Sunshine, and was nominated for The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and Argo.
His sons Matthew, Adam, and Anthony also became actors on Broadway and on screen.
May his memory be a blessing.

Oy.
Too many treasured artists have left us....and when you get to a certain age (i just turned 60 last week) these passing start to hit differently.
May his memory be a blessing.

Yeah, between Arkin and Sheldon Harnick it’s a bad week for older Jewish men associated with Elaine May.
A wonderful actor in any genre and always a welcomed presence when he popped up in a movie.

I remember as a kid first seeing him in the movie POPI playing a Puerto Rican father to 2 boys in East Harlem - he played it so well I was quite surprised to find out later on that he wasn't latino.
As I grew older I came to appreciate his performances in THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING and THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER amongst his body of work.
Godspeed Mr. Arkin.

My first exposure to him was many, many years ago when my parents took me as a very young child to see 'Popi" where he played a very convincing Puerto Rican father. One of our greatest character actors. He'll be missed, R.I.P. Alan.
