I know it's a little early to predict that, but what do you think the shows (if they're nominated) are going to perform.
I predict these:
Jersey Boys: Medley
The Wedding Singer: Saturday Night in the City or It's Your Wedding Day
Pajama Game: Could be a medley
Sweeney Todd: Most definitely a medley
Lestat: I doubt if that show is even gonna last, let alone earn a Tony nom
Drowsy Chaperone: Could be anything
Tarzan: Either Two Worlds, You'll Be In My Heart, or Trashin' the Camp
Color Purple: What About Love or Push Da Button or the title song

Posted: 3/29/06 at 11:26amI think Lestat will get a nomination and will perform, but I am not sure what they will perform. Maybe the song that opens the scond act called something like "The New World." This could be a very interesting year for Best Musical!

Posted: 3/29/06 at 11:29amTarzan will start a video montage of flying with You'll Be In My Hart played over it then go into the chorus of some Tarzan/Jane love song and end with a big dance/percusion/show off the costume production number

Lestat is NOT getting one of the four Best Musical nominations. It's one of the worst shows I've seen in years and the critics are going to destroy it. And that "Welcome to the New World" has one of the dumbest lyrics I've heard in many seasons.
It's rare for shows to do medleys -- they generally don't make for as good a showcase on tv as one strong coherent upbeat number that uses a lot of the ensemble. That's what producers over the years have traditionally preferred to go with (with a few exceptions).
Jersey Boys -- Let's Hang On, Sherry or Big Girls Don't Cry
The Color Purple -- Push Da Button
Tarzan -- Not sure
Drowsy Chaperone -- Not sure
Sweeney -- the opening "Attend the Tale"
Pajama Game -- a cut down version of "Hernando's Hideaway"
Threepenny Opera -- the opening "Mack the Knife"

Posted: 3/29/06 at 11:45amI remember "The Wild Party" did a medley, which I thought was bizarre, but I guess that was just to give Eartha Kitt a chance to sing "When It Ends" without shutting out the rest of the cast.

Posted: 3/29/06 at 11:52amIf I remember corectly Beauty and the Beast did a medly, because it was the best way to show off, the sets and costumes, witch is why I think Tarzan will do the same.

"I'd be surprised if Tarzan lasts too or gets a nomination. "
You're making a joke right? You don't think a Disney backed musical will last more than 2 months on Broadway? That's funny.
And regardless of Lestat's reviews, I sincerely doubt it will close soon.

Jersey Boys has done the "can't take my eyes off you"/"walk like a man"/"who loves you" medley on the Thanksgiving Parade, Today Show and Late Show. I love it but I think they'd come up with something new because the Tonys are special, don't you think?
I'm trying to think of a number they could perform that's long enough and if they did do "Sherry", how they'd deal with the dialogue in the middle of the song. I think they'd have to do some sort of medley but maybe not the same one. It's fun to think about!

Posted: 3/29/06 at 12:20pmWhile I am not predicting this, but I would love it if SWEENEY did "A Little Priest." They would have to cut it down to fit the 4 minutes but still it would tell people exactly what the show is all about.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I'd also love to see "A Little Priestt" at the Tonys. But I agree with Margo: They're going to do the opening "Attend the Tale". Seems like a better way to showcase the actors playing the instruments conceit.

Posted: 3/29/06 at 1:21pmMy good friend is a concierge in NYC and he said that all guests are asking for are tickets to Tarzan. He said that his broker is telling him about the obstructed seats and that premium seats are mezz. He can't keep up with the demand for the tickets. It will be a hit.

My guess is DROWSY will do either
"Show Off" which well, show's off Sutton Foster and does have some ensemble in there.
"Toledo Suprise" is fun, upbeat and features entire cast.

Posted: 3/29/06 at 2:01pmDo you really think COLOR PURPLE will do PUSH DA BUTTON? They have performed this number to death on tv. I am a bit tired of it even though I love the number. I suppose it is the most logical number, but even still isn't there anything else they could do? Do you think that if they did a smaller number it would depend on who gets nominated and who the producers think will win??

I'd like to see the women of TCP showcased...not the best song as far as the score goes but what about "Miss Celie's Pants"? It's got Felicia Fields, Elisabeth Withers-Mendes and LaChanze all singing in it and I have a feeling these three women will all have nominations. However, if the show wants to showcase the big nominee (i.e. Dirty Rotten using "Great Big Stuff" for NLB) I'd love to see LaChanze do "I'm Here" again...heck I'd listen to hear read the phone book.
Cheers,

While it really wouldn't showcase most of the cast, I think it would be neat to see Patti do "Worst Pies in London" at the Tony's since Angela Lansbury did it the first time "Sweeney" was nominated.
As for medleys not working, what about Crawford and Brightman doing the "Phantom" medly (last verse of title number, "but his voice filled my spirit with a strange, sweet sound, ...etc", and abridged "Music of the Night")? I thought that was a great way to show the lead performers singing together and solo.

i think TCP should do either "Push Da Button" or "The Color Purple", I'd think "Push Da Button", but they might try and promote LaChanze a little more at the Tonys...so no clue what they may do (but I sure hope this wins best musical anyhow!!!)
maybe for JB, they should do "Oh, what a night!"- that is one of the more popular four seasons songs, i think, and i think would be nice...or there's always "who loves you"
for TPG, i'd say either "7 1/2 cents" or "hernando's hideaway"
as for ST, they'd probably do "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", but I think it seems sort of awkward just for like a 3 minute performance...maybe a medley of like 2 songs
yeah, thats all i gotta say
and GO COLOR PURPLE!
