Just to please myself, I'll dream of Sweeney doing a medley consisting of:
The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, into A Little Priest, into God, That's Good! and then if Mano gets a nomination, Not While I'm Around...but lord knows that won't fit in 4 minutes. *Dreams on*.

Liz, I'm sure you meant to say WHEN Mano gets a nomination. Not if.
I still think it's going to the "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". They're going to want to showcase the entire ensemble playing instruments, instead of a more particular character driven piece like "Not While I'm Around".

Actually, you know what would be a good Tony number for Sweeney? "The Contest". Maybe a little abridged bit of "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir" (to show off Felciano, and Patti's Tuba Playing). And then right into "The Contest", which features the ensemble, and nicely incorporates the instruments with the story-telling. It's also a crowd pleaser.
I'm still betting it's going to be "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", though.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrel, I think what you really want is for them to just do all 2.5 hours of Sweeney Todd and broadcast it during the Tonys...
The cool thing about Sweeney is that they COULD do something like "A Little Priest" and it would still feature the entire cast, so it's possible. But I hate when Priest is shortened and I think "God, That's Good!" would be a lot better. Moments for Patti, Michael, and Mano to all shine (since all three will no doubt be nominated), awesome song, group number, and a lot easier to cram into four minutes than Priest.
Also, I like it. I mean. Patti and the tuba.
I'm betting "Who Loves You" for JB, possibly a medley for Color Purple? I like all the songs people are naming but I can't really think of any of them working for the show. I think a medley would work, though. Of what, I don't know, I'm not overly familiar with the score.

Although I like the Jersey Boys' medley that was done at Macy's Parade & other shows, it'd be nice to hear a few other songs performed on the Tonys.
Maybe "Dawn", "Rag Doll," & "My Eyes Adored You"--but still close with "Who Loves You"...then again, JLY singing "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" is such a showstopper--maybe they should leave it in!

Posted: 3/31/06 at 1:30amI think TCP will put "I'm Here" on stage simply to show off LaChanze. If she doesn't get a nod i would be assured that it would be put in a medley to show her off.

I am almost positive that he will get a nomination (and hope too God that he WINS), but I was scared that if I said when someone would be jumping on me about it and it would be a threadjack battle.

I agree with the sentiment that "they've gotta do at least a BIT of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off of You' if JLY is nominated." About the only thing wrong with the current medley they use on the press junket is that 'Can't Take..' starts off kinda slow... but, then again, it's perhaps the most famous song from the show, so it grabs attention right away without needing to be massively uptempo.
So, yeah. I'd say medley from "Jersey Boys", even if they do it all the time: Can't Take My Eyes Off of You/Walk Like a Man/Who Loves You?

For Jersey Boys, what about Fallen Angel? Maybe not...I suppose they'd want to show off John, but at the same time give the other boys plenty of coverage.
They'll most likely stick with the medley they always do, though I hope not. Rag Doll wouldn't be too bad. Why don't they try one of the medley's from the cd. Stay/Let's Hang On, etc?

I would love for Sweeney to do "A Little Priest" or "God, That's Good!" Between those two, I think "God, That's Good!" has a slighty bigger chance, since it wouldn't be cut down as much and it features a little more of the cast, as opposed to just Patti and Michael.
But I agree with most people, I have a gut feeling that they're going to do "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd"

Posted: 4/2/06 at 1:12pmI think Drowsy will perform "Toledo Surprise" too (well, that's what I'm hoping for, anyway). It's a fantastic, fun number that features the entire cast. I would so love to have a performance of this on tape!

I'm going to put my vote for medleys on all the nominated shows. Give up the superfluous "big star singing broadway song" and useless patter to give each nominated show the option to highlight 2-3 songs, if they so wish. Medleys give the audience to chance to get a better idea of the show, instead of just one big ensemble number which may not capture the essence of the show.
Good examples of medleys:
Into the Wood revival (bad audio aside)
Chicago
Spelling Bee
Of course, the shows that feel they can pull off their money shot in one big number, go ahead! But give each show 5 minutes to do what they want...in an ideal world, of course.

#67re: Tony Performance prediction
Posted: 4/2/06 at 3:49pmGenerally there's up to 10 performances, with the 4 best musical and 4 best revival perfs if all are currently running. Then there's the specialty pieces, some combination of opening number/play nominee moments/host special number/special guest number.

Posted: 4/2/06 at 5:39pmI'm excited for the Jersey Boy's # since I don't know much about the show. I think Wedding Singer will probably do "It's Your Wedding Day" by far the catchest song in the show and it doesn't really give anything away, though if they want to showcase Laura, she'll probably do some solo thing or maybe they can work it into "Pop."
