I disagree jaystarr. While I love "Revolutionary Costume", it is not a good choice for the Tonys. If the producers are trying to sell tickes (which they should be) it's not the best choice. Unless you have seen the doc., most people won't really get it.
Does anyone else think a medley for Spring Awakening is a bad idea? I don't think medleys generally "work". Think Sweeney Todd.

Posted: 6/9/07 at 8:03pmAccording to PLAYBILL.com they are only doing Anything Can Happen. I have also heard that Ashley Brown will be flying over the audience at some point during the ceremony (like Kristin Chenoweth did for WICKED).

Posted: 6/9/07 at 8:03pmI hate the idea of SA doing a medley.
#28re: Tony Performances Tomorrow
Posted: 6/9/07 at 8:06pmI don't like the medley idea either. I know that they don't just want to do "Song of Purple Summer" because it's not the greatest representation of the show (actually it is, but it's not a number that would really get people to come see it), but I wish they would do that over the medley.

Posted: 6/9/07 at 8:14pmI wish they would do something like "Touch Me", which IMO is the best song in the score.

What a dull line up
The Tonys should have let LB and LoveMusik perform , what the hall are they thinking? they do want the ratings to go up right?

From PLAYBILL.com
"Four-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald — who is nominated this season for her performance in the acclaimed revival of 110 in the Shade — will perform Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's "Raunchy" on the annual telecast. Playbill.com has also learned that Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole, nominated for her work in Grey Gardens, will sing Michael Korie and Scott Frankel's "The Revolutionary Costume for Today." The cast of the Tony-nominated Best Musical Spring Awakening will perform a medley of tunes from the Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater score, and the new Kander-Ebb-Holmes-Stone musical Curtains will perform "Show People." The final Best Musical nominee, Mary Poppins, will offer a medley of "Step in Time" (from the Sherman Brothers portion of the score) and "Anything Can Happen" (one of the new songs penned by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles).
The company of the hit revival of A Chorus Line will likely sing Marvin Hamlisch and Ed Kleban's "One," and Tony nominee Raul Esparza is expected to sing "Being Alive" from the Tony-nominated revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company."

Posted: 6/9/07 at 9:13pmReally, some of you don't like "Anything Can Happen" from Poppins. I think it's my favorite song in the show. Also love "Step in Time" and thank God their not doing Supercali since it's the most obvious choice and I'm tired of it.

Posted: 6/9/07 at 9:16pmSupercali does get old......I hope the Jersey Boys are indeed singing. Can anyone confirm???

Posted: 6/9/07 at 9:27pmhowever remember, wicked did One Short Day almost everywhere, and it was expected to perform the song for the ceremony. However, they wanted to do something big and bold, so they did Defying gravity, and I stll believe that the badness of that performance is one reason why Wicked didn't win.

Posted: 6/9/07 at 9:29pmWait, what? jag, the votes were cast LONG before the ceremony. What, do you think the votes are cast during the ceremony?

wonderfulwizard - you do have a point with "Revolutionary Costume..." probably for regular folks out there- they wont get that song and wonder.. what is that all about?
I guess.. I am thinking in my prespective being an avid fan of the documentary .
Seeing Christine Ebersole performing "revolutionary...number" on stage --I get goosebumps...so with "Another Winter .." but what could be the other choice to perform? "The House We Live In" is a little upbeat but people will still wonder as to why is middle aged woman dancing & prancing around with an American Flag... I guess almost all the numbers in ACT 2 are all strange to perform at the TONYS. Do you think they will go from any of the numbers in ACT 1 ? Medley perhaps? but Grey Gardens itself as a musical is not an easy sell to tourist or average joe. Most people wont really undestand as to why is this middle aged women and her mother act like that ...
I dont think regular people or tourist can really understand the brilliance of Grey
Gardens ...nor regular people who will happen to stumble on GG's performance tommorow.

I've always thought Peas In a Pod or The Five-Fifteen was a better choice.
Though, ANYTHING is better than "Hominy Grits".

The Thing with songs from ACT 1 is.. a lot of people have a problem with Grey Gardens' ACT 1... they think its too "trite..." which I totally disagree!...Believe me..I got into an argument during an intermission at the Eugene O' Neil Theater against a
Spring Awakening fan...when I saw Spring Awakening... I am assuming ( correct me , if I am wrong) that the producers wanted to show a number from ACT 2 (which the majority of theater folks thought that it was the best part of the musical) to showcase Christine Ebersole's talent...For all I care- Grey Gardens could perform
2-3 numbers tommorow and I will be a happy camper =)

Posted: 6/9/07 at 10:58pmOf course Christine is singing "Revolutionary Costume..." ,She brilliantly channels Edie and it is a showy, funny, tour de fource number for an amazing actress. Medley's tend to cheapen a peformance. This will get to show America a FINE performance in ,hopefully, complete form...an excellent endorsement for Grey Gardens.

After reading the playbill article about Beth Leavel's many changes and hectic schedule during her Tony night it got me thinking. The casts of shows performing on the Tony Awards who also have shows during the afternoon have to get into their costume three times during the day?
1. To tape the sequence in case something happens (as Leavel stated)
2. To do their matinee show
3. To perform on the Tony live telecast.
That costume must get pretty sweaty....haha.
