YAY I love Sutton!!!!!
I think it's unfair to make it seem like Bernadette's very minor flubs (they paled in comparison to Kahn's that same night) had a negative effect on her overall performance as Fay in the ANYONE CAN WHISTLE concert.
Frankly, she was ELECTRIC and many consider it one of the best performances of her career. I DEFINITELY agree - she has NEVER sounded better. She also received not one but TWO standing ovations mid-performance following her now legendary rendition of "There Won't Be Trumpets" as well as "Anyone Can Whistle". Better than even these is "See What It Gets You", which has recently become one of my favorite Sondheim songs due in no small part to her performance. I'd have to see the concert again, but I believe she got a 3rd standing O. YES, it was a very special event benefiting AIDs research and the excited audience was full of, shall we say, "theatre fans", but those Standing Os were well deserved and that was nearly 20 years ago before EVERYTHING got a standing O.
Much as I love Laura, what she is doing instead is better suited to her and this will fit Sutton like a glove. GL to her.

Considering that Casey Nicholaw is directing and choreographing this (as he did with THE DROWSY CHAPERONE), why should any of us be surprised?
Besides her flubs her Faye was too cold.
WAT, right after I typed that I thought of the Casey connection, but that has not been officially stated, has it?
I know Laurents mentioned it in an interview.
Does that mean we should expect Beth Leavel as Cora?
"Cold"?! It was a concert!
Have you ever liked Bernadette in anything, and, if so, what and why?
It seems even the Bernie-haters largely liked her Fay in ACW... even Arthur!
Are you even more bitter than Arthur? OR can you just not get past lyric flubs, which are not on the recording, and her "cold"-ness, which I find hard to believe one could even claim considering her warm, soulful "Anyone Can Whistle".
P
Casey was announced as the director a while ago.
Mentioned here too

Actually I'm a huge Bernadette Peters fan. The only roles I haven't loved her in were this and Annie Get Your Gun. Seen her in concert many times and even loved her Rose.
I think she played Apple a tad too cold and dry for what the role requires. Just my opinion hon, take it or leave it.
Well I hope we BOTH love her Cora as much as I love her Fay!
Can't wait!
Bernadette makes this an EVENT.
P
CPD, I was thinking that Beth Leavel would make a fabulous Cora.

I actually consider seeing Bernadette in Annie Get Your Gun a cherished theatre memory.
Agree w Pgenre, if they get Peters - EVENT!!!
"She might even make that unfunny French-disguise thing funny."
Funnily, she managed that in Drowsy Chaperone.
I'm so excited for this! I'm def gonna have to buy my ticket soon! Question, which show is better to attend, opening night or closing night? I can't decide. I'm thinking of maybe trying to catch two shows! :) Sutton is amazing in anything she does!
Does anyone know when the rest of the cast should be announced?

I'm with pgenre, I LOVED Peters as Fay. Actually, I loved that whole concert, I thought the cast was superb, and it's a lot more lively and fun than the OBC.
Is it just my imagination or does that puppet have the voice of a 30ish Steve Sondheim?
P
Creepiest "ACW" ever?
This announcement makes me so happy. I knew that Anyone Can Whistle was slated for Spring, but I was waiting until it was official to really get excited. I am definitely looking forward to Sutton's interpretation of the role, particularly in songs like "There Won't Be Trumpets". Still waiting to hear what the rest of the cast is like, but will have to make my way to New York during this (all too short) period.
WHISTLE has bee official since this past March, lol. It was announced then.
Sorry if that was confusing. I know this was announced a while ago (like I said, I knew it was slated for Spring) but these days until something gets the cast together I don't get my hopes up. And even then it's not a safe bet. Look at Godspell - it was even cast and then...nothing. So the more it's covered the happier I get.
I would also rather see Beth Leavel as Cora.
She, Casey and Sutton could make this terrible, dated script genuinely zany and funny.
Nancy Opel would also make a terrific Cora.
Out of curiosity, are you able to stage door at this type of show? I'm debating if I want to see the matinée or an evening show, and I usually do evening shows if we're going out to applaud the actors afterwards.
Yes, you can stage door the shows at Encores. I've only done it three times, but it was only crowded after Gypsy.
I would actually suggest going to the Saturday matinee if you're able, because that's usually when they have talk backs. Those are always interesting, and they might get Steve and/or Arthur.
Oh, they do? That would be awesome. I've never been to a talk back, but they always seem like a good experience. Thanks for the tip, givesmevoice! ^_^

Yeah I'm pretty sure that is him. It sounds like the 1973 concert performance (It's on a CD)..
Very creepy.
