Just saw the press release regarding the new members..

I was wondering, how do they go about choosing them?? I have nothing against anyone on the list, but it seems pretty random...

And the part that really bothers me is that there is still not one orchestrator or music director on the committee (unless you count Adam Guettel, but to my knowledge, he has only ever orchestrated his own music).

"(unless you count Adam Guettel, but to my knowledge, he has only ever orchestrated his own music)."

Adam has orchestrated several international musicals and operas, as well as other revues/song cycles that are not his own compositions.

I wonder if a busy actor like Cheynne Jackson really has time to see EVERY production of the season.

They don't have to see every production. I think it would make the job (which is volunteer, yes?) impossible.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

"The Nominating Committee attends all productions during the Broadway season and meets on the date designated by the Administration Committee to determine, by vote, the Tony Award nominees for that season."

I want that job.

Curious, can these people be involved in a show during that time?

"Curious, can these people be involved in a show during that time?"

Since Cheyenne and Susan Hilferty (just two names that jumped out from a cursory glance of the list) are not denoted as new committee members and were both involved in new productions this past season it would appear that the answer is yes. That would be why there is a fairly large nominating committee, so they can either abstain from voicing their opinions on categories that may be seen as being in a conflict of interest, or just to balance it all out.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that artists involved in a production during this time must relinquish their status as a member of the nominating committee for that season and are then eligible to join "rejoin" the committee the following season. After Cheyenne Jackson was named a nominator last year (but before THE PERFORMERS was announced), I seem to remember him saying in an interview that, should THE PERFORMERS come to Broadway, he would be ineligible to act as a nominator for the 2013 season but would be able to fill that role for the 2014 season. Not sure if I'm remembering this correctly, though.

edit: I found the interview. He mentions what I was talking about around 16:00.

The Tony Administration Committee and the Tony Nominating Committee are required to see every eligible production, and they do.

Tony Voters are obligued to see every nominated production, but that doesn't happen.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
