Posted: 6/16/13 at 4:22pmI wasn't sure what to name this thread without feeling the subject line with a full on sentence. My question is this, why is it 9 times out of 10 if there is a special appearance outside of the theatre, it's always an understudy?

Hey, don't knock the understudy! 
When "The Sound of Music" revival was playing, Rebecca Luker was out the night I saw it. There was this girl named Laura Benantti on as Maria. In a word.....WOW. It was an amazing performance. You knew you were in the presence of someone destined for greatness! (Even if her two TV shows were cancelled!)

Posted: 6/16/13 at 9:51pmGenerally sending an understudy to a media appearance is less taxing on the star, as they still do have to lead a show (usually later that evening). Also it gives the understudy something to do that showcases their talent.

Who was knocking understudies?
If you are doing 8 shows a week, who is better to take on a personal appearance? Someone well rested, or someone that might over-perform?
