Really, Jeffrey? You don't like people disagreeing (or as you say, "being mean") about something the majority agrees with? Did you also
not care for the Civil Rights movement? How about the fight for marraige equality? Differences of opinion are welcome and very valid, even if they differ from the majority opinion.
As for shows winning a Tony "because they earned it", don't forget that a lot of it simply has to do with campaigning and also the voters involved with national tours who want the most commercial show to win the Tony so their venues can use that as a marketing tool. Also, it is not uncommon for Tony voters to not have seen the shows they are voting for. I used to be an assistant to an elderly Tony voter and he gave me every single one of his tickets. I think these days, they require ID when picking them up, but not then.
Anyway, this has veered totally off topic, so back to your regularly scheduled Side Show closing notice predictions, mostly coming from those who have not seen this amazing production.

I'm 20 years old, I wasn't around during the Civil Rights movement, though there still is a majority who disagrees with that as well as Marriage Equality.
And I understand very well about how Tony voters work most of the time, I'm an avid viewer of Theater Talk (especially when it comes to their Tony Predictions), despite the fact that 'Gentleman's Guide' won Best Musical this year when it isn't even the biggest hit on Broadway, though sometimes, voters just vote for what they most enjoyed (like Avenue Q beating Wicked).
With that being said, I love Billy Elliot, I think everyone should just get over the fact that it beat 'Next to Normal', both of those shows are pretty much 'Apples & Oranges', they're very unique in their own special ways where they don't deserve to be compared upon!

Avenue Q and Wicked is a completely different scenario. Avenue Q likely beat wicked due to the heavy campaigning they did that season and all the "Vote Your Heart" ads. Voters may very well have enjoyed it more than Wicked but you can't discredit their effort either. But since you're 20 years old you probably don't remember any of that.

Let's talk about SIDE SHOW! I'm so glad the Side Show HOPEFULS are finally outweighing the Side Show SKEPTICS.
I was at the Kennedy Center run of the production. When I say the curtain fell on Act One- I wouldn't say it was applause that I experienced- it was full on cheering! Men screaming 'bravo' and women shouting as they wiped tears away- some of the men as well.

First of all - if any show was screwed over by Avenue Q's win, it was Caroline, or Change.
Second - I really hope this show succeeds. It's one If the few truly magnificent flops in every way - the score, story, and book. And the original production was stunning. I've been hearing nothing but good news about the revisal, but I'm a little weary just because I thought the original was so good.

I wasn't even following Broadway then, though I do own the 'Show Business: The Road to Broadway' documentary on DVD, so I'm at least aware of the story.

It didn't sell well the first time, despite having The Times on it side and great word of mouth. It didn't sell well in DC, despite rave reviews and great word of mouth. So what would make us think it's going to sell well this time around?

Not Selling Well for the original production- you're right. But it's a non-argument in my opinion. This is a completely new production and a new decade. I hope the tastes of theater audiences have evolved in 17 years since it's debut. Also, the production is now in the hands of a director who knows how to make any of his works have mass appeal- especially his musical works.
Not Selling Well at the Kennedy Center- you're right and wrong. The pre-sales of the show were to expected- dismal. But after stellar reviews and word of mouth by the final week of performances they were nearly sold out.
NOTE: that's a majorly fast turn around! Reviews came out allowing only 3 1/2 week of performances to pick up momentum. Not only did they ironically have to compete with a touring company of the ever popular Lion King but they had to compete with theater in the summer (where many vacate the sweltering DC area) where there is an already limited audience base unlike NYC.
Not Selling Well for Broadway 2014: time will tell but I hope it's on the Side of the Show (see what I did there.....?) Naysayers and Side Show purist need to not be obstructionists towards the success of a persevering underdog- which in essence is at the heart of the show as itself.

Washington DC is not the best gauge for ticket sales. A four week run of an unknown commodity with no names involved doubles down on the run being a barometer. If Gentleman's guide was able to hang in their that long to find an audience I am sure SideShow can do the same if it's not an immediate hit. There aren't that many choices by way of new musicals this fall - The Last Ship - On The Town (Honeymoon in Vegas doesn't open till after the new year.

Thank God I can finally say it so Jeffrey[and others] can see it--I HATED Billy Elliot-loved,loved the film but the stage show was mostly a load of crap. Phew-that feels better.
