I agree with LJay. Henshall definitely has lots of star power, great dancing skills, and her singing carries you away. When I saw her play Roxie in London I was awestruck by her performance. She just blew me away. When she's on stage you can't take your eyes off her and she just has that showstopping quality that makes a performer a star.
Back on topic,
I don't doubt James Naughton could sing the role of Ben, though I agree "Too Many Mornings" is a difficult song. Brent Barrett would also be a fine choice for this role.
I was just thinking that the late Michael Jeter (rest in peace) would've been a fantastic Buddy.

Michael Jeter would have been very good.
Lets just have John McMartin play Ben or at least Demitri Weissman?

I will give you Weissman but not Ben. Sorry.
Michael Jeter would have been amazing and his co-star the late David Carroll might have made a very good Ben. I was thinking of Brent Barrett, but he just doesn't have that "cold" quality that Ben should have.

Well if they do age blind casting like they did with the last concert why couldnt Martin do it? He can still sing.

Isn't McMartin busy with Grey Gardens?
It would definitely be great to have him as Weissman though.
but ahh, Naughton and Barrett are definitely some fine choices for Ben.
I bet in a good 5-10 years Chris Sieber will make one hell of a Buddy.

I never understood Ruthies appeal. Why do people like her so much? She's a great dancer and an OK actress. Her singing gets on my nerves.
I saw her in "Miss Saigon" London and Broadway, "Les Miserables at the Palace, "Oliver", Peggy Sue and Putting it Together. I never got that star quality vibe from her. I don't know why.
Same, I've never been a Ruthie fan, her voice just irks me.

I'd love to see McMartin get invovled in some way. He might be busy with Grey Gardens, but again, I would miss four shows for the chance to do this.
I'd love to see some legends though. McKechnie, Lansbury, Stritch, Channing and so forth.

Do you think Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury can do the rain on the roof? It would be great to see them together again.

I think Lansbury would be at better use with Hattie.

I like Channing, but I think Lansbury's voice is far better for Broadway Baby.
I hope so much that Chita can be involved, even though her show will be on tour. Her voice couldn't be more perfect for Solange. And I think she could be a great Carlotta.
I actually think LuPone would be far better for Stella, than Phyllis.

I would just love to hear Channing's barritone on that last note of "show!"

Chita and I'm Still Here. Never thought of that, but it sounds like it could work.

As of now, Chita doesn't have a stop scheduled for the time of the Follies at Encores.
I just really hope they are keeping her in mind. I'm sure she would be more than thrilled to be part of this event. I would take her as either Solange or Carlotta. While I think she fits Solange like a glove, Carlotta would be something different for her. But it would also be poignant and fitting.

I haven't seen the show live yet. Just own the 3 main recordings. So I have a slightly off-topic question for the FOLLIES fanatics.
Who do you think is THE female lead in the show? Sally or Phyllis? Judging from the recording you would think the show revolves around Sally, because she get so many songs. Then when you read about the show, Alexis got much more recognition, and everyone says Phyllis is one hell of a role. But Phyllis doesn't get her big song until halfway through the show. COULD I LEAVE YOU? Is an amazing song. But LUCY AND JESSE leaves a bit to be desired. I like AH, BUT UNDERNEATH better. So I find Sally gets the better songs, and I've heard Phyllis has the better dialogue. I imagine Sally gets the better songs, because while Alexis could carry a tune, her voice couldn't hold a candle to Dorothy's beautifully trained voice. It's also really interested that LOSING MY MIND was originally for Alexis/Phyllis, but Alexis couldn't really handle it. So it went to Dorothy/Sally.
So would you say both characters are equal? Or is Sally THE female lead? Or would you say Phyllis is THE female lead?
I hope my question makes sense. Thanks!

Yes, I would say they are both equal. While Sally has more songs they both have equal stage time. Eventhough Alexis Smith won, Dorothy Collins was also nominated.
The story behind Losing My Mind is this:
It was written initialy for Phyllis but, Alexis said to Sondheim, why don't you give the song to Dorothy because she can sing better, and give me something I can dance to, thus Lucy and Jesse was created.
I have always liked Lucy and Jesse a ton more then Ah but underneath. It has some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. But, the Phyllis song that trumps them all is Uptown/Downtown. It is so celver and really fits the character of Phyllis more then Lucy and Jesse.

This is a never-ending discussion. My personal favorite is "Ah, But Underneath." The first time I heard the last line of the song I was completely in shock and had to go back to listen to the song about three more times ("Sometimes when the wrapping falls there's nothing underneath at all").
I believe Sally is more of a lead than Phyllis but it's still hard to think of Phyllis as a supporting role. I think it is very interesting how Alexis Smith won the Tony in the original production and Blythe Danner was nominated over Judith Ivey.

I cannot believe no one has suggested the amazing Dee Hoty as Phyllis.. Although I didn't see her live, her performance on the Papermill recording is fantastic and I think she's be great opposite Victoria.
Thoughts?

Oh, Dee Hoty was great in the Papermill staging but I want someone else to tackle the role this time, especially if someone like Donna Murphy or Joanna Gleason takes on the role. Fortunately, Hoty's performance was recorded.

Hoty is so remarkable on the CD.
I like the idea of either Murphy or Gleason, but I'd prefer Murphy.
I really hope Chita plays Solange - she's perfect for it.
It would also be great to see Channing do "Broadway Baby", but I doubt she will be involved in any way. I bet we'll either get someone totally random, or Elaine Stritch again. I'm sure Elaine would want to do it.
Who would you guys cast as Carlotta?
Do you think they would ask McKechnie? Glenn Close would be interesting as well.

I put my money on Angela fulfilling one of the roles. She is itching to get back on the stage and this would be a good showcase for her.
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera, Donna Murphy and Victoria Clark on the same stage?

I would like to see Polly Bergen as Carlatta she was my
favorite next to Ann Miller in this role at the Paper Mill
also liked Donna Mcceany as sally from this cast and from
the concert old form Mandy Patakin. In my personal opinoin
nothing could top the paper mill prodution it was like there
and then gone good.

I would love to see Bette Middler in the role of Carlotta, I think it has to go to a B Hollywood actress. And what will make it more powerful, is that she was once an A movie actress.
