Hey guys,

I was wondering what the protocol is if I wanted to view a recording of a past show (in this case, WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN) on tape at NYPL. The library page seems to be pretty strict with its guidelines, but Ive read that people on here have had different experiences.

Its not necessarily for research purposes, but just to rewatch the show since my memory of it is a bit foggy.

If anyone can provide me some insight into the process, that would be very helpful

Just make something up like you’re writing a paper on broadway shows. Honestly that’ll be enough.

Yup...you just cant say you want to watch it for entertainment.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Not sure what others’ experience is but due to the low quality audio and especially screens I find that the shows I have watched here don’t tend to stick in my memory for as long as I’d hope! Still, a very handy resource.

Well, watching something on tape — even a professionally shot version — is not going to have the same impact as a live performance. That said, I’ve been using the library for almost 20 years and am eternally grateful for the resource it provides.

You have to be an NYPL member to use the library (free to join if you’re not already). Other than that, I’ve never been asked to “prove” my credentials for why I’m watching something. It helps to make an appointment in advance, although they do technically accept walk-ins.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body
