Bernadette, definitely. I never saw her live, but she was amazing in the video. Vanessa was good, but not as good.

Bernadette's singing was bewitching but her acting was lost and she gave an embarassing performance. Again, this time the Tony committee got it RIGHT by Not nominating her for this clueless performance.


I can't vote because I never saw Vanessa Williams in the part.

WISHIHADATONY: You say that time and time again, yet I absolutely could not disagree with you more. I thought she was absolutely fantastic in INTO THE WOODS, only judging from the video, that is. Embarrassing performance? Come on....you sound like you're critiquing someone from GOOD VIBRATIONS, not INTO THE WOODS...

With that said, I thought Vanessa Williams was absolutely 100% AWFUL in INTO THE WOODS. It's the worst performance I have ever seen on Broadway, next to Gary Beach in LA CAGE. She was wretched.

Yeah, there's no if's and's or but's, Bernadette all the way. Vanessa was good (yes, I did see her), but I couldn't erase the memory of Bernadette's performance. She just IS the Witch. And Bernadette sang the role so much better as well. I mean, come on, Bernadette's "Last Midnight" or "Stay with Me" cannot be topped. Just beautiful.

Julia MacKenzie in London was brilliant- in fact, the whole production was stunning- possibly one of the best ever of a Sondheim show. It is a tragedy that nobody got around to taping it.
But in terms of the original message- Bernadette, no question!

I never feel anything when Vanessa sings - and she's just so bland - I'd definitely go with Bernadette.
