I just got around to seeing the first episode. I thought the pilot showed promise, and the first episode definitely had some interesting elements. I enjoyed the musical numbers (naturally), and there were some really clever lines of dialogue, but in between all of that I found the writing rather weak and, dare I say it, clumsy. I hope the 2nd episode is better but if the writing is similar to this first episode I'm afraid even the musical numbers aren't going to keep the show on my TiVo list.
I found it funny that everyone considered Lea Michele the best singer of the group when I thought the black girl (sorry, dunno the actress's name) had a better voice.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
kchenofan's computer is broken right now. This is her fridge. Now, you can leave a message, but say it slowly, so I can write it on a post-it note and stick it to myself.
Sorry-but I think this show is Hilarious-excuse me but the gag reflex line was laugh out loud! I think we need a show like this-something fun-and doesn't take it self so serious...or in acting terms..."literal". Why does everything have to be literal? This is pure entertainment-and the singing is off the hook. It reminds me of the campy fun show I grew up with "Rags to Riches"-we haven't seen a show like that until Glee came along.
Actually, swaine, my objections have nothing to do with how "literal" the show is or isn't. I'm love both Arrested Development and 30 Rock, both of which are the types of quirky shows I think Glee aims to emulate. I just think the writing falls far short of both of those shows. There are a number of one-lines, like the one you just cited, that were funny, but the rest of the writing hasn't, so far, followed suit. I am glad you enjoyed it, though, and I certainly hope it both gets better and finds a large audience. Updated On: 9/13/09 at 03:19 PM

I LOVED Rags to Riches... when I was 7. It really doesn't hold up to modern viewing--absolutely awful writing, and campy for the wrong reasons. This show's more like the early 90s Hull High! ok I kid, that was awful too...

I must confess, I'm not a Ryan Murphy fan and thought the pilot was extremely uneven. I think what's turning people off is how over-the-top the show's satire is - it's so bubbly/cartoony that it feels familiar and obvious, not cutting.
That said, I'm a huge fan despite GLEE's broader strokes. The second episode was a considerable improvement to me and felt more confident and lived in than the pilot. Secondly, Lea Michele is a knockout. I wasn't impressed with her acting in SPRING AWAKENING but love her voice; she seems to connect to her material more fully when singing than acting. In the pilot her character struck me as little more than a Tracy Flick clone, but Michele deepened her immensely with "Take a Bow" at the end of the second episode. At the screening I attended, you could palpably feel the audience giving themselves over to her performance. I'm sure the success of GLEE is especially sweet to her given that she was originally told that her looks were "too ethnic" for television.
So someone commented on tvguide.com that the Asian girl is probably going to be underutilized in the show! For some reason I'm going to have to agree on that, but we shall see.
BTW, the kid in the wheelchair looks really familiar. Then I was watching the Season 5 DVD extras of The Office and he did an episode. He was the pizza delivery kid that Michael holds hostage! haha
