Talking about resident productions, I'm surprised that we haven't heard anything about Disney putting down a resident production Downtown Disney in Orlando. There's a resident Cirque show currently running and has been running for about 15 years now. The Lion King would be a great choice, as it always is such a huge hit. Same with Universal Studios' CityWalk and the permanent Blue Man Group show. Wicked would be interesting there too, but I heard that the attendance to Universal is way less than Disney (not surprised...)

Posted: 6/25/13 at 2:07amThe problem with putting Wicked in Vegas is that it locks the tour out from playing some cities. That's what happened with Spamalot, Jersey Boys, and Avenue Q.

Wicked had already attempted to have a "permanent, open end run" at the Pantages in LA I believe, I might be wrong. Same with San Francisco, so I wouldn't think it would cause a problem. Did AIDA ever run in Vegas, I believe it did, and that's a pretty material heavy show.

Posted: 6/25/13 at 3:27amWicked has played long runs in LA and SF, so I wouldn't rule out Vegas. And totally forgot that I saw Avenue Q and Spamalot at the Wynn! I created my account pretty soon after I saw Spamalot.

I was just in Vegas for a convention at the Venetian/Palazzo and they had Priscilla and Rock of Ages running. Priscilla is there for the summer only (June-August) and they are marketing it as "all the songs you know and love" in the videos on elevators and lobbies. One conventioneer (60yo woman) I chatted with saw it and loved it --- but was surprised to discover that there was a drag component. The Vegas marketing is not emphasizing a drag/gay element at all.
I encouraged her to rent the movie.

Vegas itself isn't that conservative, but its visitors can be. Not when it comes to drinking, drugs, gambling, and whoring around - but gays?! God forbid.

I know the feeling!

I did think the same thing. I would think, as others would think too, that Kinky Boots would be a generous show to play there, but then again that's kind've the same as PRISCILLA with the gays and glitzy costumes

Bump.
Since the movie was successful and a revival will hit Broadway next year, do you think a shortened version of Les Miserables could work in Vegas? (would shortening it be a problem to the plot?) It will be playing The Smith Center in two weeks.

So which productions have been successful and which have failed and why?
In Vegas, why would Phantom and Chicago succeed but Hairspray and Avenue Q not?
