Posted: 2/21/21 at 11:27pmYes, opening night performance was filmed for Japanese TV. The same opening night performance was released on BluRay, but a different performance was released on DVD format.

It was filmed for Japanese television in 1995 and released on DVD in 2000.

The performance on the Blu-Ray is a different performance than is on the DVD. Same show, different performance. The camera blocking is either different or just edited differently. And there a few quick zooms and jump cuts that look like the show was filmed live but the camera work was not edited before being committed to home video. It plays like this was a live feed (did they air a live performance on TV and just suffer with some bad camera goof-ups here and there? If so, this is that performance). The DVD version looks much more polished and professionally shot and edited.
The same distributor that released the DVD also released the Blu-ray, but they didn't include any of the bonus features from the DVD version.
The Blu-ray HD quality is fantastic but the performance on the DVD (and the camera work on it) is better and more polished.

The Blu-Ray is definitely edited differently. It's unfortunate because the DVD is the more polished version, and as stated above the Blu-Ray seems to have a few cuts where the camera wasn't lined up for the shot yet.
The Blu-Ray also doesn't have the introduction with Julie Andrews or the Entr'acte and the DVD does.

https://youtu.be/LVhV_lOQHSA This is a video of Seth Rudetsy and Anne Runollfson. In it, she describes the time she was at home and had to rush to the Marquis Theatre to go on for an ailing Julie Andrews...mid-show. Her voice is out of this world.
