I think it is totally hilarious!
I caught part of this on tv earlier today, and it cracked me up.
Ellen actually did 3 segments on her show showcasing her visit to PROMISES, PROMISES -- that clip on her site (and YouTube) is the 3rd segment where they showed her actual performance.
The previous 2 segments she showed on her show were of her rehearsing her scene onstage with Sean Hayes as well as singing "I Say a Little Prayer" and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" with him; rehearsing the curtain call; visiting with Kristin in her dressing room while Kristin demonstrated how to put on fake eyelashes (she also makes-out with her dog); vocalizing before the show with Sean and Kristin in Kristin's dressing room; etc.
I love Ellen. But, I think this takes away from the show. What was the point of this? It would be different if she was guest starring and then people broke character...to me it just seems it was a gag and found it to be very disrespectful to the company and the creative process. But, it did look like a lot of fun.
I agree a bit with Jovie27...It's fun to watch on YouTube, but I don't think I'd have wanted that to happen if I were seeing the show that night. It really did detract a bit from the performance, taking the attention (for what is supposed to be such a small, quick role) away from the two leads and diverting away from the story a bit.
I was there that night. I loved it. Calm down dragon & jovie...I highly disagree with y'all. I'm not trying to be rude, but some people can be so uptight sometimes when it comes to the THEATUH!
Hey Mywonder,
I have no problem if she made a guest appearance. But, to me the video sample read as "Look at me, I'm Ellen, trying to be in a show...and I know I should not be here". If she did not add lib about "they made me come back on" or anything to that nature I would have loved it...but you are there to see the production, not Ellen. Nothing seemed natural about it. It was a forced publicity stunt (for no reason what so ever).
So do tell me, what was the point of this?

You're right...it was a publicity stunt. But, everyone in the audience loved it. Afterwards, Ellen (and Portia) were at the stage door taking photos and signing autographs.
It was a great few moments and I loved it...and so did Sean and Kristin. It gave the show publicity from someone who is loved in our society. If the cast of Promises, Promises and the audience that night weren't offended by this then why should you be?
Listen, I love Ellen to death, but I agree with those who say this is a bit distracting. Maybe more than a bit. I see how it could have been fun and made the audience starstruck, but you can't deny that it's distracting even just a tiny bit. If it were a straightforward cameo without all of the ad libs and breaking of character, that would be a different story.

I personally would have loved to have seen Ellen that night. My favorite thing about live theatre is the fact that anything can happen & that was definetly unexpected. Even if it did distract from the show, it's Ellen! & it was only 5 minutes in the beginning-middle of the show. It's not like it ruined the ending or anything. I thought it was fun.
Come on, this is Promises Promises, not some serious dramatic piece.
I think it was totally okay. No different than when Whoopi Goldberg decided to make a cameo in The Lion King a year or two ago. If this were something like Marat/Sade or some kind of serious piece, that were not a fun musical comedy, I would agree. But it's just fun and the people who were there were lucky enough to see Ellen DeGeneres in a Broaday musical. Not many people will be able to say that. And as for the "point" of it all? I believe, publicity. Also, Ellen is very good friends with both Sean and Kristin, so I'm sure she was just in town and said she would come do something like this and the producers agreed. No biggie.
Anyway, LOVED the video. :)
Oh for crying out loud, it was for fun, publicity, a laugh and joke. Why must everyone on this site turn everything in to such a big deal

You're all bitching, but the secret is that you wish you were there.
I know, I sure do.
at least she didn't wear isotoners.
