Is it me, or does it seem like Did They Like It is really 'upgrading' reviews -- not just this time, but recently? I didnt read all of the reviews, (I canot access some of them), but those I read didnt seem nearly as 'thumbs up' as they claim. (And this was even much worse for Art and Jeff Ross.
Am I being too harsh?
I don’t think Sara Holdren’s review is negative. I would firmly classify it as mixed. She has a number of positive things to say about the performances, but she does take Jamie Lloyd to task for leaning too heavily into his chic; cold; bare, but expensive aesthetic he’s been leaning on for the last few years. It is also, as ever, a pleasure to read her criticism.
I found this disappointingly mediocre. Keanu was very weak, Alex was serviceable. I’m beginning to really question how successful Jamie Lloyd is at storytelling. Without a superstar vocalist or a coup de théâtre… I don’t know.
The set was stunning and the sound design was perfection as usual with his shows.
Very meh evening. Not terrible, just bland. I paid too much.

I attended last evening's performance. I thought it has vastly improved from the last week of previews when I last saw it. Both four actors were perfect. Even Keanu I thought was superb. Truly heartbreaking. The Pozzo/Lucky relationship was more disturbing than I remembered. Just for the sound and lighting, this production is worth it. I wish they filmed it. Strange to see such an existential play on Broadway packed to the rafters (I know why, but still....)
A very well mannered audience, also.

‘Godot’ Is a Puzzle, However You Pronounce It

I got lucky with the insanely competitive digital rush today and caught the matinee.
Having been 9 when the first Bill and Ted out, I was super excited to see the two of them together in a way I wouldn't normally be about seeing celebrities. That was the vibe for much of the audience. For example each time Didi and Gogo hug, there's a very literal "awwww..." coming from the audience, in a way that felt very specific to the actors and their decades long bromance.
I had never seen Waiting For Godot staged before, so I don't know how it hits when done well, but this wasn't it. The production isn't horrible, but the dialogue is intentionally very repetitive and a few times I caught myself zoning out. I don't always agree with Jamie Lloyd's directing decisions, but this was the first time I saw one of his productions and thought he's bringing nothing additive to the material. Nothing new is revealed in the repetitions.
The rush seat was orchestra Row N, Seat 14. Directly in front of the seat was a curtain, but the play is staged so exclusively center stage it wasn't really a problem. It was way less of an issue than when I had a similar rush ticket for A Doll's House.
