^ I played Linus in
Snoopy! It was fun. I liked being a boy for once.
The most enjoyable performance I think was playing Sally in a stage adaptation of
Nightmare Before Christmas. I also enjoyed playing God in
The General of Hot Desire and Anybodys in
West Side Story. However, I think what makes Sally the most enjoyable was the sheer fact I did not expect the part at all. I just scribbled it down last minute under the "role(s) you want" section, read for it, and thought "It'd be great to get an ensemble role." Getting a call within the next day or so informing me that I had gotten a lead (or rather one of the bigger roles) was a surprise. Sally was so different from characters that I play or am drawn to, and it really helped me overcome a lot of insecurities I had regarding my singing voice. For the first part of rehearsals I felt uncomfortable singing "Sally's Song" because I felt it wasn't mine, that it belonged to Catherine O'Hara. The more I explored it and the more I explored the different avenues I could take with the role, it began to become less and less frightening. I still don't like the song, but I don't regret saying yes to the part.
Anybodys is a close second, truthfully, because that part also helped overcome my fear of dancing. I don't feel that's my strongest suite and playing a tough, no nonsense, crass tomboy was a lot of fun. It made me understand that I didn't have to be perfect. I enjoyed having freedom to explore the character and to have a director that felt comfortable letting me figure out what was best as far as voice and movement were concerned. I got to play and really put myself into someone else's shoes.
