Are they on crack? Are they deaf? I mean the pickings for best musical weren't as good as they have been before (still some good shows) but did they have to choose that one?

"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT?!?" ^^That was me when they named "The Pajama Game" as winner. Seriously, WTF? That piece of suger-coated fluff wins against a revoluntionary piece of art? I'm going to cry...
I probably noticed when the nominations came out but there was a lot of "British invasion" with actors with shows like HISTORY BOYS, FAITH HEALRE, and AWAKE AND SING. These 'imports' are showing what is lacking in New York theatre today...in fact, perhaps most of Western Theatre.
I, myself, was surprised by the loss of Best Musical revival to PAJAMA GAME. Personally, I can't understand how such fluff can win over such deep genious of Stephen Sondheim, but that's revivals for ya! Perhaps voters admired the SWEENEY revival, but maybe the minimalist production did not win everyone's favor. I personally prefer the original Prince production (and yes, orchestrations!).
Perhaps a bigger political statement was made with JERSEY BOYS winning best musical. Now, I haven't seen it so I can't even give an opinion as to whether I thought it deserved it. But still, CHAPERONE was a very likely contender. I know it's been discussed but I guess this is the show that joins the "Musicals that won Best Score/Book and lost Best Musical". This is very rare, as we all know. JERSEY BOYS, a purely American (and relatively local story to New York) defends the AMERICAN MUSICAL. CHAPERONE, a Canadian musical, may be considered a Broadway wannabe.
This all makes sense to me at least...If not, I shall shut up.
"You know...The Color Purple was an American musical...WHY THE HELL COULDNT THEY GIVE IT TO THEM!!!"
No offense to anything regarding the show (this is not me being cynical), but most New York audiences don't care for stories in South. Just like how most of middle America (and yes, the South) don't care for New York theatre. See, it's full circle!
While I agree with most of the winners, there were a few I was confused by.
BEST MUSICAL went to Jersey Boys while it should have gone to The Color Purple or The Drowsy Chaperone
BEST FEATURED ACTRESS in a Musical went to Beth Leavel while it should have gone to Felicia P. Fields
BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL went to The Pajama Game when it should have gone to Sweeney Todd
BEST SCORE/LYRICS went to The Drowsy Chaperone when it should have gone to The Color Purple
BEST SET DESIGN of a Musical went to The Drowsy Chaperone when it should have gone to The Color Purple
BEST FEATURED ACTOR in a Musical went to Christian Hoff (who, don't get me wrong, I thought was great and I'm fine with him winning) but Manoel Felciano deserved it much more
BEST FEATURED ACTRESS in a Play went to Frances de la Tour and it should have gone to Tyne Daly

You know, I live in the South, and that is partialy true. Most people down here dont like New York Theater...but every night RENT came down to B'ham Alabama (yes, I live in the hell thats Alabama) it was sold out. Same with Lion King, 42nd Street, and Hairspray.
So maybe you damn yankees are more discriminatory than us good old Southern boys. Nevermind, forgot that whole period between 1800 since well, hell were still discriminating everyone but rich white christians.
Hi everyone, I'm new, but OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THE OUTCOME OF THE AWARDS TONIGHT! I feel just like I did when Bernadette Peters was passed over. She deserved that Tony for Gypsy! Sorry....old wounds. Anyway, I think what happened was the vote was split and The Pajama Game just sort of slipped in. I mean, I love the show, but I think Sweeney or Threepenny both deserved it more. Heck, I would have been happy with Threepenny simply because Alan Cumming was involved, but I really am disapointed. Oh well, at least I got to see Stephen Lynch perform so it's not all bad.
I'm certainly upset with a lot of the awards (Particularly Jersey Boys' win, because now Drowsy is gonna have a hell of a time attracting audiences with a title like that.)
I'm also upset about The Pajama Game's win, but I find it very interesting. Had Marshall lost, it would have been a repeat of her bout with "Wonderful Town", a well-reviewed show with strong star turns, and nothing but choreography to take home in the face of a Sondheim show. Perhaps the Tony voters were trying to prevent this from happening again? I don't agree with this, I think that Sweeney is the most brilliant show I've ever seen, but it seems the most logical explanation.
Jersey Boys is a real show. Every show on Broadway is a REAL show.
I like to think of Best Book as a consolation prize to the loser of Best Musical. Honestly, I thought Drowsy would win, and I'd have been alright with that - it isn't my favorite, but I understand.
This show turned out a lot different than expected.
The wins of Jersey Boys and Pajama Game are par for the course for the Tonys. Why does this surprise people? And as for artistic merit, please try to remember that musical theatre was born out of popular entertainment and ran for decades before artistic merit was a consideration. And it is quite obvious from the ticket-buying public that popular entertainment is still the backbone of commercially successful musicals. Sweeney earned its place in history in its original (and in my opinion, superior) run. A highly stylized minimal prodction does not automatically mean it is good, or that it will appeal to the masses, or the voters. It will appeal to devoted Sondheim fans and fans of unconventional theatre. And these are not the majority. Both revivals got good reviews. It could have gone either way. But the voters may be thinking about a tour, which is the WRONG reason to vote for any show. Or they may have found Pajama Game more entertaining. It happened to Millie/Urinetown and it may have happened here. Who knows? Personally, my vote would have been Urinetown/Pajama Game.
And I don't think The Color Purple had a strong enough book or score to win. Neither did the majority of the reviews, so that was not a surprise at all. But I'm thrilled LaChanze won.

ok lets see the only awards i'm happy with tonite....
John Lloyd Young: TOTALLY DESERVED IT. Christian Hoff: yes i was cheering for Manoel.... but this came out of nowhere. Jersey Boys: i wanted Color Purple to win. though Drowsy was def. going to get it. but happy Jersey Boys won.
WHY THE HELL DID PAJAMA GAME GET BEST REVIVAL?!?!?!? i swear the voters are seriously on something. Harry Connick wasn't even that great it the show. why the hell would they give it best revival? UGH! Sweeney got screwed like non other tonite.

Honestly, i think that Sweeney has a very selective taste. and not as many people will sit through and enjoy Sweeney as much as Pajama Game. Not that im saying either did or did not deserve anything, im just saying, Sweeney has a very dark and almost depressing tone, as opposed to the light-heartedness of the Pajama Game.
Plus Mrs. O'Hara is gorgeous. and pretty damn talented.
AND regardless if it is a JUKEBOX musical or not, JERSEY BOYS is still amazing, and definetly deserved a tony for best musical.

I couldn't agree more!!!! I saw the show last Sunday and thought there was no doubt that it's brilliance would be awarded tonight. "The Pajama Game"???? I'm sure it's real pretty and fun and about as deep as a west Texas puddle. Sweeney was THEATRE.
lol, Oprah must be so pissed, especially considering that her entire show tomorrow is devoted to the Tonys. Ha. Her musical got virtually nothing.
Everyone else has voiced my opinions on Pajama Game winning. Like, what? Sweeney is clearly superior! That kind of risky and raw direction is so rare and was passed over. I hope it doesn't discourage future directors from pushing the envelope.
