Ephraigm Sykes in Ain’t Too Proud. Can’t see someone reaching the highs and lows Sykes is able to access in his tour de force.

He’s a well-liked guy onstage and off. His performance is sensational. He’s been a secret weapon in ensembles for years. I count myself among the many who’ll be rooting for him.

Well we can agree to disagree! The beauty of these threads is looking back and seeing what actually happened. I’ll have to be the lone voice of support for Ain’t Too Proud I guess (which i haven’t seen, just repeating what I have heard from industry friends and Producers who have named this the dark horse to watch out for), but I really do think you guys are in for a surprise when it comes in.

I think Patrick Page would be a lead along with Amber Gray. If Girl FromTheNorth Country comes in I think Todd Almond could get a nomination.
"

Orpheus and Eurydice are the leads of Hadestown structurally, despite less stage time than most leads. They would be fools to petition Amber and Patrick as leads instead of supporting - the roles are meaty for supporting but sparse for leading. There's no way they'd win if they're nominated as leading, but I'd say they have a very good chance as supporting.

I know we have to wait until March to see Glenda Jackson's King Lear, but, in my opinion, the Tony is Elaine May's to lose. It's a shattering performance.

Having seen Glenda do Lear in London: it is a marvelous performance, but my pick out of the two would be Elaine May. And with Glenda winning last year, I can see them giving it to May. Although that didn't stop Metcalf from winning 2 years in a row. Also I suppose Glenda's performance could have a different feel under new direction. Although knowing what we now know about Glenda's relationship with Mantello during 3TW, I can't really imagine her altering her performance much based on the whims of Sam Gold.

Will Maslany go featured?

It’s such a great role!

I know we have Ruth wilson, but Diana is perfect for an Actress.

And we still have Ruehl and Allen just with the plays already doing previews. The noms for both seems likely.

Also, can Laura Donnelly win Lead against May or Jackson?

After all, she won the bafta over Imelda doing Martha in virginia woolf, Lesley manville doing Mary Tyrone and audra as Billie Holliday.

In addition to delivering an astonishing performance, Elaine May will be the sentimental favorite at the Tonys. I don't think anyone will beat her.

Elaine May is simply extraordinary. But there will be another octogenarian in a running show come Tony time (Glenda Jackson's Lear). I would love to see May win, especially since Jackson just won last year, but I fear she could be overshadowed by Lear. Though Tracy Letts won for a fall play over Tom Hanks and Nathan Lane in spring shows, so anything is possible!

Elaine May is simply incredible in The Waverly Gallery. It's a remarkable performance. I don't think she'll be forgotten come Tony time. I think Jackson will provide serious competition, but I think Annette Bening, Laura Donnelley, and Laurie Metcalf might be serious contenders as well. I wonder if it's possible that we end up with six nominees in this category if Keri Russell does amazing work in Burn This. I do think that Kerry Washington will be forgotten come Tony time.

I just saw this last night.  She is leading.   She has more stage time than Beetlejuice.   The program has her and Brightman as the first name (although under the title).

I personally found her to be the weakest person in the cast.  I don't think she is deserving of a nomination.

Sophie would be one of the youngest nominees ever in her category, right?

And if win come tony night, youngest winner.

I agree that there are several strong contenders for Lead Actress in a Play, but Elaine May has more going for her than just her remarkable performance. A well-respected 86-year-old screenwriter/actress/director/comedienne returning to Broadway stage after 57 years (to the same theatre, no less) doesn't happen every day. Her performance is Tony-worthy on its own, but I think people will WANT her to win, and I think that counts for a lot.

She will be 17 come Tony time.   Andrea McArdle was 14 when she was nominated for Annie.   Liza was just 19 when she won for Flora.   I think she could be the youngest winner in this category.

Even though Cher has been in previews for one day I’ve heard Block is giving a stunning performances. Could it be a race in between Caruso from Beetlejuice and Block from Cher? From what I’ve heard both have been giving killer performances. Who would be more likely to win? (I feel like this is a smaller category this year)

It's most likely between Block and Kelli O'Hara.

I would for sure give Micaela Diamond a featured nod.

Yeah, for Caruso to win so early it would need a big impact and a well beloved show. See Ben Platt and Lea Salonga.

If not J Block, which is the frontrunner now, maybe OHara.

i dont mean literally, but can we blame the destruction of this entire musical season on head over heels? they are preventing company, hadestown, secret garden, and ill jokingly throw in bat out of hell too. im not mad, im just surprised if paramour could be bought out that this hasnt been yet.

Of course it's too early to make a real prediction here, but I'm going to give a big shoutout to Elaine May and Joan Allen for Lead Actress and Featured Actress.

The lead actor and actress categories are so stacked this year, I'm really interested to see who gets left out.

After seeing The Waverly Gallery tonight, I'd find it hard to believe it May, Hedges, and Joan Allen don't all at least get a nomination. May also deserves to win. Ugh she was so great and heartbreaking and natural. Fully embodied the character. Great work over at The Golden!

Bump because there's a lot of talk about Play nominations in the Mockingbird thread.

My "way too early" predictions for the two categories being discussed:

ACTOR IN A PLAY
Paddy Considine, The Ferryman
Bryan Cranston, Network
Jeff Daniels, To Kill a Mockingbird
Nathan Lane, Gary
Michael Urie, Torch Song

ACTRESS IN A PLAY
Laura Donnelly, The Ferryman
Glenda Jackson, King Lear
Andrea Martin, Gary
Elaine May, The Waverly Gallery
Laurie Metcalf, Hillary and Clinton

Andrea Martin is listed below the title for Gary. I know they could easily petition, but maybe it was very intentional considering there are only two people in it (I think)? Make it clear that Lane is the lead and Andrea is supporting him? Not sure, though.

I think the Play categories are the ones to watch this season. Some very strong contenders this season, and I hope to see more of them. Based on what I have seen, and have read. These are my predictions for the best play and best revival category.

BEST PLAY:

Network
Gary
The Ferryman
Hillary and Clinton (maybe idk bout this tho)
To Kill A Mockinbird

BEST REVIVAL:

The Waverly Gallery
The Boys In The Band
Kiss Me Kate
King Lear
Torch Song

EDIT: Wow. Also forgot about Burn This coming in this season. Man this year is stacked for plays!! I hope another revival musical comes in, if it does then I expect Burn This to take Kiss Me Kate's spot.

Is this early praise for Gary based simply on the known talents of Lane and Martin? Or did it play an out town tryout somewhere...?

(Ulterior motive: I'm trying to decide if my parents would like it when they come to visit in the spring, but there doesn't seem to be any info about it anywhere, other than that it's happening.)

For Gary, yes. It truly is a prediction based on the material and the people involved. Who knows, maybe it'll be the worst production of the season! Or the best! Who knows but I for one and very excited for it
