I may try the lotto on Sunday, for both shows if I lose the matinee. Hopefully it's not too crowded.
No reviews from the 1st preview?
To all of those who attended the first preview, please, please, please, let us know how it went?

Is row A the second row of the orchestra at this theater? And would that be too close for this show?
Yes, Row A is 2nd row.
I sat in Row A for CYRANO and it was VERY GOOD for the play, but for a musical, I'd go a tad further back to experience the full spectrum of the set -- this set in particular is pretty intense.
Aww, I saw this thread at the top of the page and thought someone posted something about the first preview.
I really can't wait to hear news of how it was!
So I won the lottery and got front row dead center seats. There were not many people at the lotto at all for those wondering. They have added a lot of hysterical jokes since the off-broadway run. The set is a little bit more ellaborate, but not by much. Everybody came out the stage door and they were all the sweetest people. They were so funny, one of the girls who wasn't on the poster drew herself on it in stick-figure form for me. The entire audience was on its feet before the lights came up for curtain call and it was sold out. So it just shows that it will be very well received.
Anyone else? Perhaps with a little more detail.
wow, it was sold out? good for them! i'll be there tomorrow night!
Ummm..well if you have any specific questions just ask and I'll try to answer them. I'm not so great with writing a review. But the man next to me reeked of marijuana.

I was at the show last night...I want to thank verynewyorkcurious for the ticket...much appreciated.
First of all...the show was amazing. I saw the show on the second-to-last night of its off-broadway run and I must say the show has been tightened up a lot. I didn't notice huge changes in the show. Some of the dialogue is different, better I must say. The jokes are better. It seems everyone is very comfortable in their parts. The replacement of John Herrera by Carlos Gomez is a great one. Carlos is much more charming and his chemistry is much better with Priscilla Lopez. I must say I felt more connection with the characters this time around. I think they were given slightly more backstory. It's a great ensemble piece that really has so much energy. I'm curious to see how the Tony nominations will get divvied up. Most of the leads have equal stage time. I could see Lin-Manuel getting nominated as a lead actor. Olga Merediz and Mandy Gonzalez as best featured actresses.
I never like to say this because I know someone out there will pick it apart, but I think this show is pretty close to perfect. It's charming, funny, energetic, and has a strong message of family and that home is where your heart is. I really hope they don't change much during previews. The cast is amazing Andrea Burns and Robin De Jesus and Janet Dacal provide a lot of best comic lines in the show.
The only thing I wish was that the Richard Rogers theater had better accoustics, some of rapping done by the actors is lost on the upper mezzanine...maybe some speakers projected up there would help. It's just that it flies by so fast that some of the verse gets lost in the echo. That's really my only complaint and it really has nothing to do with the show.
It was also great to see the latin-american community turn out in droves to see this show. This is the base audience that the show needs to run for a long time. It is a great, if simplified, representation of a hard working class of people and their struggles. I plan on seeing it again, and again.
Ever see a show and just wish you could live in their world and know the characters? For me, In The Heights is one of those shows.

you're welcome...if anyone has any questions, let me know...
i got tickets to this next weekend on a whim, but I am actually starting to look forward to it. Keep the reviews coming!
What did you think of the 3 new songs? And what were they called if you don't mind :)
Thanks to crushgroove & justjohn for all the new informations. I wont be able to see this one till the 1st week of March. Its nice to know that they changed some things from the Off-Broadway run. What are the three new songs? I cant wait to see this.....
I hope they changed the part in the story (subplot) that dont like...
******SPOILER***************
The part where the parents need to sell their bussiness so they can send their daughter back to Stanford. I thought that was kinda unrealistic?
1st. Are there enough good school in the Northeast (like Harvard, Yale, Brown, even NYU) why does she has to go to CA?
2nd. If she cannot get a scholarship (well iMO- being a minority ..she should be able to get some.. if she's bright enough!?
3rd. Well if she's not that bright.. they should not be wasting their money on her..dont 'cha think? well this is just my opinion! me-being a son of an immigrant family here in the US. My parents will not spend all their money for me- just to go to College.
Well.. these are just my thoughts from the OFF-BROADWAY run that I did not like.

Hope for the best for the show!

Can anyone provide the lotto details for tonight? Is it at 6?
crushgroove -- Thanks for the early review. I saw it late in its run off-broadway too and I'm glad to hear they've made some positive changes to the show. I'll be seeing it next time I'm up in March and I can't wait. Now let's hope audiences embrace this one and it becomes a runaway hit!
***SPOILER ALERT*******
jay, I don't think Nina was forced to go to CA she chose to go there. As for her parents needing to sell their business it is not really that unrealisitc. Drastic? maybe but its not completely unfounded.

Yeah.. I guess.. that's the word is DRASTIC....Youre right... I just did not like that sublplot. and her name is Nina.. I forgot it already and when I saw the show at 37 ARTS .. it was still early in its previews..January' 07 to be exact...so they must have change some things alreday.. that's why I am seeing it by 1st week of march a weeks before they open & on its frozen state already by then...
I have the 7 songs demo and it grew on me..unfortunately when I saw the show..I did not hear any of the music...and after I saw the show... I really did not like it, but Chris love it and we talked and talked about it..and i guess my opinion changed a lot from then about the show. I also saw a marathon of shows that week.. we took a week off and stayed at my sisters in Queens.. We basically saw 9 shows from Tues- Sun with matinees.. I guess...that marathon of Brodway shows does not work for me... I really dont have time to think and digest it...
I guess.. my opinion changed over the past 13 months about the show. I am not a type of person that If I LIKE or DONT LIKE the show..that's it!--- I am close to other opinion's already...I changed my mind several times..
As I said- I am very excited for a show that's original, fresh and very raw..and definitley I will see the show with a clean slate of opinion even though my first impression of the show was not that favorable. I will definitely go in with an OPEN MIND as I always do, and for the record- my opinions are not always right- that's why I post -sometimes people have to point it to me, and that's the best part- I learned things here.

The 3 new songs are called:
1. "Enough"...sung by Nina's mother, Camila...
Good song, Camila re-establishes her voice in the household, putting her foot down to end the strife between her daughter and husband over school and selling the business.
2. "Champagne" which replaces "Goodbye"...
Usnavi says goodbye to Vanessa with a bottle of champagne, she thanks him for helping her with the down payment on her downtown apartment. Quite effective song, really shows their chemistry and their budding romance.
3. "When the Sun Goes Down"...sung by Nina and Benny...
I'd have to hear this song again to really remember it, but it does wrap up their storyline and what they will do when she goes back to college.
also added is a reprise of "No Me Diga"
Eliminated songs:
"Plan B"
"Hear Me Out"
"Goodbye"
The songs that really stand out for me are:
"In The Heights"
"Breathe"
"96,000"
"Paciencia y Fe" (Patience & Faith)
"Carnaval del Barrio"
"Alabanza"
Hope that helps...I really can't wait for the cast album...
