Thanks for the input Dreamcatcher. I think you're right about the placement. And no, it's not sad that you know all about the costuming etc, that's commitment haha.
That was the first bit of dialogue I had really seen. And even though I couldn't really hear it, it seemed like they were doing it well. I admit, I was really worried about what the movie would be like with extra dialogue, and I'm just hoping it doesn't sound as stupid as the Phantom of the Opera dialogue. But, knowing this cast, I'm sure it'll be incredible.
And yeah, I kept pushing rewind after that clip and turned the volume up extremely loud to try and hear Anthony more clearly. Didn't work that well haha.
oh, and welcome Macavity and Johno (and anyone else I missed)..I'm pretty new myself, actually. Glad you're here sharing in the Anthony/RENT love.

I don't really forsee any of the extra dialogue as being a problem. While the opera format of the show on stage is awsome and works just fine, I have a feeling that for a movie version it wouldn't work out as well. It just wouldn't appeal to people who are completely oblivious to RENT to have very minimal speaking. And while I haven't seen the movie yet so I can't make any concrete judgements on the subject, from what I've gathered so far, it doesn't seem like the dialogue is going to be pointless banter simply put there to waste time between songs so they can say "look, we have dialogue now!" It seems like the lines themselves (and I'm just basing this off that online script which seems to have proven fairly trustworthy by now although many things have probably been changed by now) actually have substance and purpose to them. Like within each scene of just dialogue between the songs there is an objective and alot for the actors to work with and interpret individually. I know its a bit too early to say for sure but right now, my assumption is that the dialogue will add to the movie as oppose to take away from it.
Aaaaand that was my little speech of the day! :-P Anyways yeah I can't wait for more movie clips to start popping up. Like the promise of some on the official RENT site. That day will be a happy happy day indeed.
Dialogue. Didn't Anthony say something that the dialogue that would be in the film...nevermind can't remember and probably shouldn't even try to fill in the blank there. I don't think dialogue will kill the film. Part of it is there are quite a few people out there who aren't familiar with musical theatre and wouldn't really expect a film to have all singing and no dialogue or hardly any. So I think it'll be great anyway.
And Dream no worries about knowing that stuff. Trust me it's not weird and it's cool that you remember stuff like that.
This is probably a really stupid question, but has anyone who has the Rent book noticed that in La Vie Boheme B the lyrics in the book are written for Angel in a different order that Wilson sang them? I mean it's just something I noticed and had a slight debate with someone about.
Yeah Race I did notice that. Kind of funny. Hey did you say that you had found a book on Urinetown with a full liberetto? If so, where could I find that? I'd love to have something like that.
In other news, I may very well lose my virginity. My RENT virginity that is. :-P I'm going to NYC this fall to look at NYU as a possible college choice (yay Tisch!) and while I'm there I'm going to go see RENT! Maybe I can scedule the trip so I'm in NY when RENT premieres. Now that would be fun! So having said that, anyone have any comments on Matt Caplan as Mark? As far as I know, he's the current Mark after Drew Lachey left and so I figure he's the one I'll probably see but I've heard little to nothing about him as a singer/actor so any comments would be welcomed. Slightly off topic but ah well. I've heard wonderful things about Cary Sheilds, and Karmine Alers so I'm hoping for a good Mark to top it off.
I've heard many a good thing about Matt Caplan as Mark. He's played the role before he took over for Drew Lachey. So if he's still in it, check it out.
Yes I found a book about Urinetown and it's got some background information on it and also the libretto. I got it at B&N a couple of weeks ago. So if you're interested maybe you could find it.
Well I'd better get my ass down to B&N then. :-P That sounds like a really interesting read. And I've been meaning to go spend an afternoon there anyways (There's one a few blocks from where I work, much to my joy. Now I don't have to ask for rides.) The bookworm in me is starting to get a bit testy.
Cool, yeah I'm quite excited to be seeing RENT so soon (providing I can finalize the trip and get tickets) with this particular cast. Hell, what am I saying, if this happens for sure I'll be going round this room faster then a humming bird on speed, dancing madly with excitement. I found some sound clips of Matt Caplan from his new CD and he has a great voice. VERY Mark-like. I could easily see him really nailing some of Mark's songs. His voice actually reminded me a bit of Anthony's voice so maybe that's why. :-P
Quick question, in short I found a copy of a live performance of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Anthony's performance) and was wondering what people's opinions are on the show. Would it be worth the 20 dollars or so to buy it? I know a bit about the movie version but that's it and I don't want to waste my money if its only got a few good songs to it. Anyways any info would be great.
I am clueless about Hedwig. Sorry Dream.
It's an interesting read. I haven't gotten all the way through it because I'm still trying to read Harry Potter, but with having to study for driver's ed in class quizzes everyday I haven't had time. So there you go. Good luck trying to find it.
Oh sorry about the threadjack, but Dream I saw part of the episode where Sara finds out about Hank. tear. Okay sorry for the threadjack.
Oh yeah, that's a sad episode. Poor Sara.
Yeah I think I'm going to walk down to B&N after work and look for that Urinetown book. I hope I can find it.
About the dialogue: you guys are right, I know. I just needed to get a few of my little fears out there and pushed away. good job. haha.
Oh and Dreamcatcher..I'm going to NYU college searching too! I probably won't get to see RENT as my mom doesn't like it all that much and last time we were in NYC (during my bday) I made her see it. But the cast right now, in my opinion anyway, is FANTASTIC. I was so worried that they couldn't compare to the OBCR, so I just didn't listen to it for several weeks (bout killed me hah) so I could try and forget their voices. But, when I went they all sounded beautiful. It was as perfect as it could be and I smiled and sang for the entire night after.Eeek good memories. Anyway. So the cast nearly matched up with the original recording.
Though, I didn't see Matt, I saw Jay Wilkinson (sp?). And when I got there I was so upset that it was the understudy. But i think because Jay was so new at it that he brought a freshness and excitemnent to it that I loved. Plus, his voice was very close to Anthony's so I was happy. Cary Sheilds was amazing. He doesn't sound like Adam much at all, but his voice is pure and powerful. I liked him a lot. I liked them alll a lot. If I had to say..probably the weakest was Maureen that night. But she was still great.
What I hear about Matt is that he does a great job as Mark, and his voice is Anthony-esque like you said, but now that he has been doing it for a while now, some say that he seems bored on stage at times and goofs off. Don't know if it's true..it's just what I heard. But I hope he's brilliant if you see him.
Anyway, I've rambled on long enough.
Hope this helps a little.

Editing because I just wanted to add this little quote from the cast in the upcoming OUT magazine issue. it deals with dialogue and made me happy. I can't wait to read it all,:
Adam: A lot of the segue stuff—not the songs proper—actually are now gone and have become dialogue that’s much clearer and more succinct and helps move the story forward in a better way than it did in the show. The whole “Christmas Bells” number is not in the movie. The important moments from the number have been incorporated into the movie.
Tracie: It’s really tight.
Rosario: I think the soundtrack alone just with the singing is an hour fifty. The movie would just be tremendously long to have it all in there, as much as we’d love to. I think the pacing [director Christopher Columbus has] done is really brilliant. Anything that’s been confusing to people will be cleared up, but the integrity of it has been maintained. So people who have been completely in love and savored every single word I don’t think will be disappointed.
so yay. And sorry my post is so freaking long haha.
Yeah it is sad. Stupid Hank. Oh well it's fiction. I'll stop threadjacking now.
Yeah it's a good book.
TheatreLover- Yeah my mom's not huge on RENT either. But when we do go to NYC this fall for colleges, I'm probably just going to go by myself. That way I can do the stagedoor thing and take my time without anyone nagging me to hurry up. It sounds kind of weird, but I've always kind of want to see RENT alone when I see it for my first time. I know most people always want to go with friends etc but I don't know, its just always felt most right to me, having that experience for myself, by myself. Sorry if I'm making absolutely no sense :-P but yeah. Anyways yeah it sounds like a great cast on Broadway right now and I'd be thrilled to be able to see it. My friend recently saw this cast and said that he was enthralled the whole show. And he doesn't even like RENT, his parents took him to go see it with them. I can't wait! And I'm glad you enjoyed the show when you went to go see it.
Race- yeah I know its fictional but still, poor Sara. :-P Some of the kids at the summer camp I work at might actually do a scene from CSI. Nothing morbid, just a funny little moment where Greg has his Swami hat on and is doing a little comic bit for Sara. Fun stuff.
Those two really need to get together. They're perfect for each other and they've already seen each other okay well Sara saw him, but yeah. Okay that sounds wrong so I'm just going to stop there before I dig any deeper.
That does sound funny though.
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with Finer Noble Gases. I had an opportunity to ask someone who'd been in it earlier this year, but it was not a great time since the actors/director were talking about the play they'd just performed. Maybe I'm just really slow and stupid, but somethings in it I just don't get. I don't know.
Heh yeah Race, that does sound a bit wrong to those who haven't seen the show. :-P Oh well, we get it anyways. And yeah they should get together. Although the producer said that they were going to explore into the Grissom/Sara aspect of things. Who knows. OK but quite enough threadjacking for one morning....

When I was at the barricades during the Bryant Park concert, I made a quick sketch of two rabid Idina/Anthony fans I've encounter. Both Idina and Anthony signed the sketch. Here's a pic of it.

Sketch info: The one holding 'I HEART ANTHONY' is saying 'Dorky Lurve'. You can't really see it since it's so damn faint.
hypertruffle- that is so awsome! If I ever get around to finishing my Adam sketch (and move on to doing the rest of the cast) I may bring them down to the premiere (if they have one in LA) to get signed. That's such a cool idea. I really do need to work on those sketches.....The Roger one is almost done and now that the movie poster is out, I could use those pics for the rest of the characters.

hypertruffle- that's awesome!! I love it, and the fact you get it signs by anthony and idina rocks! lucky-
~~EM~~
Dreamcatcher- I totally understand the want to go solo the first time when you see it. I think you could totally absorb yourself in it that way and not be bothered by anything. I think it would be really special.. just you and and the music.. ok now i'm starting to sound all cheesy sorry hah. Well anyway, I hope you love it when you go...(don't see how you wouldnt.)
Haha don't worry theatrelover, didn't sound cheesy at all. That's seriously how I feel about the whole matter. I love going to see shows with big groups of people, don't get me wrong, but for RENT, I just want it to be about me and the show and the music and getting wrapped up in it. This is like one of those rare times where I don't want to have someone there to talk to about what just happened in the show or whatever. That way there are no distractions I guess. I don't know, I'm probably just rambling inanely now. :-P Mika needs more sleep.....
In other news, It is now officially 2 weeks until I get to see the LSoH tour in Costa Mesa after a good 6-8 months of wanting desperately to see the show!! Sadly, Anthony is no longer in the show (I'm still kicking myself for missing LA) but I'll still get to see the rest of the amazing cast and I couldn't be more thrilled! Plus Johnathan Rayson certainly sounds like a good Seymour from reviews I've read so far. yay!
Jonathan Rayson was the u/s in the Broadway production, and he gives a wonderful performance! He's not Anthony, but you'll love him.
Yeah Dream at least we got what we were talking about. Still like I said I wasn't going to dig any deeper than I did. Lol.
Those are cool drawings though! They're awesome.
So yeah. Have a fun day tomorrow everyone!
Yeah I have very high hopes for Jonathan Rayson as Seymour. I'm really excited!
And as you notice with my avatar, that new Tango picture is amazing! I love it! I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish school would start up already so November can get here sooner.
That's not crazy. And the tango looks awesome from the picture. I understand. Nice thing it's close to thanksgiving weekend(I believe). So I can drag my friend to it. heheheh
Heh well its crazy for me, academics is...well....lets just say its no picnic for me. I could probably do it well if I applied myself 100% but theatre and singing constantly distract me....:-P What can I say, my heart just does not lie with math and science. But I need the grades this year so I guess it'll be taking a front seat position for a change.....
Anyways, yeah the tango pic is awsome. That is going to be a kickass scene in the movie. Wow.

Dreamcatcher, I love that pic! Tracie Thoms is so awesome.
"Anthony Rapp walked in and started singing with me, and I thought I was going to pass out."
That is definately on my top-five list of awesome quotes XD Go Tracie!
I give you guys mad props for keeping this thread going!
Let me know if he comes back! I miss him too!
