Hey, quick question. I was browsing the internet mindlessley yet again, and I came across an old download of Anthony singing Without You but sadly the file had long since expired. Does anyone know where I might obtain a copy of this or what/when itw as from?

oh, and my thing with the Mark/Roger fanfics is that... well, I mean, it's really easy to figure out what sorts of assumptions they probably stemmed from. And I don't mean character-based assumptions and/or fantasies. Granted, I'm sure some are -- but... there's too much inter-connection, for me to be comfortable with the idea, I think. I don't think I make sense.

But then again, I'm also sure that aforementioned parties are/were at least mildly aware. I mean, they know what's up.

It's just... for me, at least, that's a weird line to mess with. It's not exactly as weird, but that's like the people who write first-person Roger/Mimi sex scenes, just so they can write a scene like they're narrating being in bed with Adam.

Fanfic squeaks me out in general, but real people fanfic is creepy. I mean, imagine if YOU were looking around online and suddenly found this graphic description of you having sex with your friend and coworker. It's definite motivation to becoming a Luddite.

Can I just say that I find it amusing that it's been about 6 months since Anthony has posted, but this thread is still active?

ha, I'm amused as well. Yet here I am participating in the oddity.

I've read some admittedly amazing works of fanfic, but in general, since most writers aren't that great, it freaks me out -- you can see straight through the alterior motives. Not even just coworker -- close friend! The thing is, you can bill Mark/Roger fanfic as not "real people" fanfic all you want, but... there are many instances in which I don't buy that. People just want to pretend Adam and Anthony are what they're not.

Regarding Anthony singing "Without You" - I used to have it on my old computer and it got lost in the transfer process. I don't remember where it's from exactly, but it was a live performance where he dedicates it to Jonathan Larson. Very bare-bones accompaniment, he sings the whole thing very softly. Not really something to be critiqued, like people are doing in the Take Me or Leave Me thread. I'm sure it's floating around somewhere if you search for it...

I understand what you're saying about the fanfics Emcee, to a certain point it is a bit unerving if you look at it from certain points of view (say Anthony's or Adam's etc.) Maybe not so much with Mark/Roger fics, but with the real life ones, if that where me I'd certainly be a bit scared but then again I guess it all depends on the person and their general ways of reacting to things. I guess I'm on the fence about it, I've read some beautiful works that do depict Mark and Roger as a couple and then I've also read some that are just like "Hmm I think I want to make them have sex now". So I don't know, I won't deny that I do enjoy a good fanfic and I have read Mark/Roger ones that I really enjoyed but I don't know if its something I, myself, could ever write. I think I'm rambling a little at this point (damned benydril....makes me so loopy....) so I'll stop before it becomes a full on rant but I hope that made some sense.

With that being said, I must thank those who have sent me links to the Without You clip. It is beautiful and very calming. It's a great song and I really liked it on acoustic. Wonderful, wonderful job Anthony! Now I'd love to see him rock out, singing something like Out Tonight or Adam's solos in Another Day or something.

Dreamcatcher, I think I can stomach the third person ones a lot better than I can the first person ones, for what I suppose are obvious reasons. The ones I've read that I've found to be really great have all been third person, I think. I just feel like if you're going to write something like this and at least have a stab and seeming like you aren't doing it so you can narrate yourself in bed with one of these actors (because here, these are the actors that define the characters, try as you might to deny it), then you can't do it first person. That's just weird.

I also -- I've said this before -- never picked up on Mark and Roger being anything further than best friends and roommates. However, I think how you percieve that is partially based on who you see. Partially. That's WHY I alluded to assumptions and speculations that led to the beginning of Adam/Anthony/Mark/Roger fics. But, I don't really stand where I am just because I don't see that about the characters -- it still freaks me out when people write really graphic first-person Roger/Mimi sex scenes. Or, I mean... write it, be merry, but don't stick it online.

I think with fanfic in general, there are ones that are so beautiful because Jonathan left us with such wonderfully deep, explorable characters that feel like real people, and the good writers can really dig into that. Those aren't the writers who are just like "woulldn't it be really hot if Mark and Roger [Adam and Anthony} had wild, crazy sex?"

Don't get me wrong, I've totally read them, simply out of curiousity. I've read ones that at least try to be decidedly Mark/Roger, but... oh! There's one that ties in the lyrics of Adam's song, Just Here to the Left of You, which I thought was quite clever. Reading it, I think I was so uncomfortable because Roger didn't write that song. Adam did. That's what I meant about having far too much crossover. Granted, write what you want, share it with your friends, have a lovely time, but... I wonder why it's not weird to "publish" this stuff.

Allie, do you have this recording?

It seems like a lot of the Rent people do sogs that they don't usually sing in the show. Okay, well, by a lot, I mean Anthony and Idina. I wish Adam would do something totally out-of-character, but being that he went so many years refusing to sing Glory, I doubt that'll happen.

I've always loved how the characters are so explorable, even to those like myself who have never written a RENT fic and probably won't do so in the near future, and people have turned out some amazing works based off their own personal perception of Mark, Roger or any of the other characters in the show. And I think its great that people can find a way to express their views of these characters and this storyline that maybe have not been touched upon in the actual production because, for me, it opens up these new ideas and concepts about the plot and characters that I would have never explored before and it broadens the expanse in a way. In a way, I guess its alot like seeing the countless actors and actresses who have been in RENT over the years. Each one brings a unique approach to their respective character and by watching it, whether conciously or subconciously, our minds are exposed to these new approaches that we would have never considered. Or had we considered, dismissed it as being impossible or unusual because of it being hard to imagine. Either way, whether it be an author approaching it from that standpoint or from the "I want to make them have hot sex" view, the more power to them. I can't say I've never read both and I've enjoyed many fanfics over the past few months. Plus, in my opinion, its just another way to express creativity and get emotions out and people should be able to post whatever they wish to post so I guess my bottom line in this is no one has to read with anything they don't want to read. It's just there, whether with the intent for public reviews and reads, or just a little way for the author to vent whatever they're feeling. But I agree with what you're saying Emcee, but if I repeated all of it this would become a novel and I'd get sued for causing permanent eye damage. :-P

On another note, I found an official download (or what seems to be) of Anthony and Adam singing What You Own at Standing Ovations and it also said that Anthony sang Skid Row with Jessica Snow Wilson and others and was wondering if anyone might know where I could find a clip of this. Thanks!

Well, yeah, I get what you're saying -- in a "live and let live"/"if it makes them happy" sort of way. And I guess that's true. But I think there's a line between creativity-based exploration of character, and the simple desire to write pornographic stories about two really attractive actors. Granted, the line certainly blurs... I'm not going to point fingers and say which fics I think are about the characters and which I think are related to conceptions of Adam and Anthony, but, you know.

Yeah I know, and I agree, there is a line (albeit a very blurry one) about when it goes from character exploration to character exploitation based off the actors who play them etc. And while I don't necessarily agree with those on a moral level about it, its the same thing in my opinion, its their choice to post the stories and write them as long as they aren't being harmful with them or completely inappropriate about it.

About the fanfics. I like the ones that are about the characters, but the ones about the actors as real people are just really creepy. I mean, you can't write stories (like that) about people who really exist. I do like to read the Mark/Roger fanfics.. Some of them are really good. Just some of them though, cause mostly they're just about RENT-characters having sex with everybody. I like the ones that really have a storyline :). But yeah, it is their choice.

I sure as hell am guilty of reading fanfiction of all types, but I agree that when the line between character and actor thins, it gets more than a little creepy. Mindless sex fanfiction is more like an author's fantasies about the actors than anything else... I mean, you have to admit, when most fans think about the characters in RENT, they envision the original broadway actors. Correct?

I do, however, enjoy character exploration/well-constructed fanfiction. I remember reading one a long time ago where Mark got hit by a truck (or a car or something) while he was trying to film something.

Yeah, it was sad, but oddly in-character.
