a) do a search
b) a standby is a person who covers a part for an actor but is not in the cast
and wait an understudy is different right? an understudy is actually part of the cast right?
Thanks a lot!!

Sometimes, in the case of a show with a small cast, the understudy isn't already in the cast. In that case, the difference is that understudies have to report to the theatre every night like the rest of the cast, whereas a stand-by just has to be nearby, reachable by phone. In the pre- cell phone days, they had to call in at half hour, and at curtain time, letting the stage manager know where they were - at a bar or restaurant nearby, or at home - if they lived close to the theatre.
doesnt that suck tho, i mean understudies could be all make-upified and dressed but in the end never perform cuz nothing came up

The understudy has to get all makeup and costumed all the time? Also, if there is a standby how do they get ready so quickly like if they got a call ot come in quickly, how do they do it, because for Wicked it takles Idina a few hours.

when daniel davis left la cage on friday nite, it took about 20 minutes for john hillner, the understudy, to get ready. granted, he had to learn all the dance steps also....

No, an understudy doesn't get into costume and make-up every night, because they are either in the show already in a small role, or they are understudying several roles.
