Recently (after the year 2000), what do YOU think was the best new show overall?
My choices:
-The Light in the Piazza
-Grey Gardens
Now your turn
I'd have to agree with you, those two were exactly what I thought of.

I agree with JRB (Caroline)
I think LITP will certainly be remembered as one of the most important musicals of the decade - in a way I see Grey Gardens as the beginning of its legacy. Let's hope there'll be many more shows like these.

"in a way I see Grey Gardens as the beginning of its legacy."
How so? Grey Gardens was written before Piazza was at Lincoln Center.
I think she means the final product of Grey gardens, what is seen on stage right now.

Grey Gardens. I'm so original. And if we can include Off-Broadway, I think See What I Wanna See is pure brilliance.
hands down Caroline or Change
Mamma Mia!
Hairspray
Wicked
Jersey Boys
I think Urinetown is important, because it's the best political commentary musical since The Cradle Will Rock.
Mamma Mia, because it's simply the most entertaining musical in years. I've seen it 5 times, and woudl go again.
Grey Gardens. This musical is the most important contribution to the musical theatre since Follies, not only for its topic, but for what it represents to the musical theatre.
Thanks wonderfulwizard11, I was indeed referring to final products, and was comparing them very loosely. I wasn't suggesting that Guettel DIRECTLY inspired Frankel & Korie - I think you know that joniray. I wasn't even trying to say that GG is derivative of LITP - beyond a few superficial similarities the two shows are completely different. Of course GG was conceived before LITP hit the stage, but if this is going to descend into a fussy point-scoring argument over chronology, then may I point out that Guettel started writing music for LITP way back in the late 90s. I was making a (very) general point about the two shows - suggesting that LITP's success has helped to foster a climate in which shows like GG can compete more readily.

Urinetown. It will definitely be around for years to come -- it's evolving into one of the most fun, hip, best shows for high schools and regional/community theatres to do. Easily my favorite post-millenium show.
I can't really comment on the plays but as far as musicals are concerned:
CAROLINE, OR CHANGE (my top choice, great example of an effective post-modernist musical, pure brilliance)
GREY GARDENS
La Chiusa's THE WILD PARTY
THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA

The Light in the Piazza and Urinetown, mostly.
And another for your consideration: Jerry Springer: The Opera!
Musicals:
Caroline, or Change
See What I Wanna See
The Light in the Piazza
The Wild Party (LaChiusa)
Light in the Piazza
Urinetown
Assassins
tick..tick.. BOOM! (or does that not count since it was Off-Broadway?)

Hate to ruin your list, but Assassins was written and first premired in the early '90s.
