CRY-BABY being nominated for Best Musical.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I've always thought a musical based on the life of Mary, Queen of the Scots would be fascinating. The more I've read about her life and reign, the more interesting I realize she is. There is quite the colorful cast of characters.

Another would be a musical about Louis and Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. Marie Antoinette, in particular, is a fascinating historical figure. Updated On: 5/30/08 at 09:30 PM

The signing of the declaration of independence.

But seriously.
I feel like we need a good Vietnam musical, maybe dealing with student opposition or domestic life.

In a different thread some time back someone had mentioned the meeting between Grant and Lee that ended the Civil War. Yes, there was a Civil War musical already but one detailing the days leading up to this true event could really work if the right people were behind it.

I'm still all for Phineas Gage: The Musical. If you count that as a historical event, that is.

The behind the scenes making of the "Beatles". I know it sounds all too Jersey Boys, but there are some great stories of the Fab Four, and incredible music - if Michael Jackson would part with it for the score.
It would have 'legs' as a tour show and a real powerhouse on Broadway.

Several years ago I was mesmerized by a painting "The Execution of Lady Jane Grey" - then read the story of England's 'nine day queen'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Execution_of_Lady_Jane_Grey_%28painting%29

Riveting, and so very sad. This would be a fabulous epic musical. Betrayal, love lost, a country turning against her, imprisoned in the Tower of London until her execution at a tender age - I think 16 or 17?
