Phantom/ALW Demos?!

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

Does this feel like a "plant" to anyone else?

A “plant” for…what exactly?

What, are we expecting some story to break that ALW didn't compose the show, and he's getting out ahead of it with proof?

Like, for a release of the demos commercially, or cross promotion for the novel coming out, really anything. It just seems weird to me that the amount of people in and out of that dressing room over the years never said anything about this, or mentioned it. Sierra is has a great relationship with Andrew and the show, that it seems to fit it would be her.

150% a publicity stunt, to get everyone talking about the show, at least. Especially since ALW's Instagram commented on her first post, "finding" the cassette. I like how surprised they're 'acting' while listening to it.

Let us not forget that the production closed during the pandemic and the theater was cleared out. I find it difficult to believe this cassette tape player with this demo was just left floating around backstage for 40 years. Someone would have mentioned it by now.

Would be nice if this was teasing a vault release... like set of demo recordings or takes, but I feel anything like this would have been released as a bonus track somewhere, rather than a stand-alone release.

Interesting that we got to hear some of it, regardless!

We must have been typing at the same time! Agree, re: the amount of people coming in and out over the years. I also meant to touch on Sierra's camaraderie with ALW and I agree it seems appropriate that he would allow someone like her to share this.

Update: phantomoftheopera, andrewlloydwebber, alwmusicals and sarahbrightmanmusic have posted a reel about this 1984 demo tape with "To be continued." on Instagram! Looks like we will get more!

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

Seems odd that this “plant” wouldn’t have been done in time for the red/white OLCR vinyls that just came out, but ok. Wouldn’t be mad at a separate release.

"Returning to the original analogue master tapes recorded at Abbey Road in 1986, Andrew has created a new mix of the legendary London Cast Recording of The Phantom of the Opera, bringing fresh clarity and detail to the performances of Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton."

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

Obviously just a promo for the new release of the album. I am very interested by them saying it reinstates cut music that was removed to make it fit on LP/CD before - there are some very audible harsh cuts on the releases so far - be very interesting to hear it, although why its taken until 2026 to go back to the master multi-tracks, when Sunset/Aspects/Starlight were done in the mid 2000s - with material reinstated. Adding POTO would have made more commercial sense?

ALW has a mammoth archive - only glimpsed at on the final disc of the ''Now and Forever' CD release. He has been rich for most of his career, so has been able to have pro-shot video of his Sydmonton Festivals, studio demos with full orchestra for works in progress, along with his cassette demos at the piano.

Me too; I've always wanted the full Hannibal performance scene.

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

Very excited to hear the cut material, even though I'm annoyed because I bought the limited-edition colored vinyl last year.

Also a bit of a nitpick with the modern-day Sarah Brightman autograph on that replica signed poster: if they're going for a period-accurate signature, she used to spell out much more of her name in the late 80's, as long as she wasn't in a hurry!

"The result also restores sections of the score that were removed from the original release because of running-time restrictions."

I'd like to know whether "sections of the score" means ALL of the parts that were excised, or just some. For example, I want the complete Don Juan Triumphant rehearsal scene, beginning with the chorus singing "Hide your sword now, wounded knight..."; the original cast recording begins that scene with M. Reyer addressing Piangi, i.e., "Don Juan...Signor Piangi, here is the phrase...".

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

Looking at the times of each track for the digital release it looks like only the Hannibal Rehearsal track and Masquerade will have extra material. The title song has the electric guitar added back in.

Was the electric guitar part of the original recording? I loathe it and I don't really like this new version of the title song. It sounds like a completely different instrumental which is way beyond remastering.

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

I don’t hear the guitar on the original.

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

The guitar is definitely not present on the original. Agreed that this is well-beyond a remaster and is more of a remix, which I suppose is what they're sort of accurately titling it on official platforms. It sounds very reminiscent of the original single with Steve Harley.

I don't mind that they added in the 1980's hand clap sound.

I doubt all of these instruments were recorded for the original cast recording. Unless they truly didn't have time to mix it properly and were rushing the recording into stores at the time. I feel it's more likely they went back to the raw instrument recordings of some of the later cast recordings and layered bits and pieces here and there, finally adding the original vocal tracks on top.

Instead of just tweaking and remastering the original tapes of the original London cast recording, this is more along the lines of what "Next To Normal" did with the anniversary re-mixed cast recording, however this seems to be pushing the envelope even further.

Re: Phantom/ALW Demos?!

I'm not a huge fan of the title track, especially with the addition of the new click track. The vocals feel oddly isolated and detached from the overall texture, which sounds muddy and uneven.

HOWEVER, I eagerly await the rest of the score that does not have the synth tracks like the title song. Not sure how much "cut" material we will get. I am hoping for some rebalancing/brightening of the orchestra so we can hear some of those lovely woodwind passages. Cautiously optimistic, but more curious than anything.
