What if Broadway shows went on with audiences limited to 250?
edit: to premium ticket prices during the outage
They’d lose just as much money as if they closed.

If everyone involved, including the theatre owner agrees to accept 10 cents on the dollar -- sure, why not?

they, most likely, wouldn't be able to collect insurance if they continued performances. actors/staff couldn't collect unemployment. they would stand to make more not working than performing for a small amount of people

For the many reasons stated here, this isnt practical. But i think the question is based on the fact that Cuomo shut down gatherings of more than 500 people. So theoretically, a show could close the mezzanine and perform for smaller audiences. Its not an insane question.

Financial considerations aside (which obviously is not an aside, as well), why would you want to continue to put actors, crew, FOH and everyone else more at risk at a time when risk mitigation and slowing the spread of disease is the goal of the measures being taken?

it is an insane question - why jeopardize attendees this is an outbreak -doesn't anyone get that!? Why would you want to attend 100 - 200 - 300 -800????
Stay home and watch bootlegs on youtube or subscribe to Broadway HD streaming channel. Certainly not as good but it’s better than nothing. If everyone does what they should hopefully we can get ahead of it and back in time for summer. 🙏🏻

What if there was premium/exclusive ticket pricing for limited/exclusive seating during the outage?
Not so much “hey kids, let’s put on a show” but “hey kids, let’s keep our show alive through the outage.”
Maybe there would be apprehension - liabilities if anyone contracted virus there?

Not sure why people feel the need to respond to someone's question with such hysterical or bitchy responses. We can still be civil even if in strong disagreement.

A lot of shows were going to $50/seat just to keep people going. Not sure charging less people more money would attract anybody.

True
The answer is money, but the hysterical responses aren't warranted. It's a fair question given that some production in the city are still happening (We're Gonna Die), because they fall below the 250 mark.
That said, I can't imagine those shows will do well given out freaked many people are now.

The people who would be able to most easily afford this "premium pricing" would likely be older theatergoers, i.e. people in the group with the greatest risk of catching and dying from this virus. Do you think it's wise to put them at risk especially since this will be the key group needed to help Broadway recover once the risk has passed? Do you think that would be a good public relations move? Can you imagine the headlines if even a few of these people got infected and died? Beyond that, many of these people have seen 25-30% of their net worth completely evaporate within the last 10 days. Do you think paying premium prices for theater will be a high priority for them over the next month?
and how far apart are they going to seat the 250?
who is going to show them to their seat, hold their ticket, then hand it back?
Who is going to serve them at the bar and pick up their glasses
etc etc these random untested people.
Why 250? why not 251? Is 250 not a crowd? or 249?
ONE is a crowd if you happen to be standing next to the wrong person.
You can't just pick a number and say oh! 250 together is a safe bet, won't be any affected in that low number.

In our current situation, do you think there is a difference between 250 and 500 people packed in a space together?
Answer: No.
My dance classes have been canceled and we max out at 25-30.
Stop this nonsense.
